Naturalisation – becoming a South Korean citizenAcquirement of citizenship in South Korea is increasing in popularity but in no way easy. The most basic way is through marriage of a Korean citizen or by having at least one parent of Korean descent.

However, for those who have no such connections to Korean citizens, the process becomes much more difficult. Obtaining citizenship is possible but will require ardent proof that the applicant has a serious desire to become a citizen. In 2003, Only 291 foreigners without the previously mentioned ties achieved Korean citizenship.

Application processThe application process may include some of all of these requirements:

at least five years of residence in South Korea
proficiency in language (reading, writing, and speaking)
knowledge of Korean culture and history
an interview & written test

I totally disagree with him; you're not an idiot and it's a smart move, if you can truly immerse yourself into the society and culture as best you can. Always remember that you're an outsider who can live inside, and you should have minimal problems. I've lived and worked in Korea for 14 of the past 18 years and I truly love it. I don't live in America and I'm proud to say that! Also, there are nearly 200 countries on Earth and America is only one; meaning there are other places worth living in besides America.

First, the air is polluted in some areas, such as Seoul, Taegu and Pusan. But it's also polluted in Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and many other areas in America. Moreso than in Korea.

Second, some water sources are polluted, but not all of it. I drink water out of the tap here in Seoul, without a store-bought water filter, and I'm living fine. Plus, Seoul water folks (http://arisu.seoul.go.kr) check the water for healthiness twice a year (perhaps more frequently); I know because twice this year I've given samples to them from my apartment faucet over my kitchen sink and they do a field test on it; always negative results. Then they continue checking my entire apartment complex (greater than 100 units). I've been drinking tap water in Korea since 1992 and I have never gotten sick from it, contrary to stories from the American GIs generated in the 1950s.

Now, to answer your question: You can apply for citizenship or permanent residency here in Korea. The process is time consuming but it can be done.

First, try researching the Immigration Bureau here:
http://www.immigration.go.kr/indeximmeng.html

Second, try researching the Government's webpage:
http://www.korea.net/ Check out the Sitemap for more info.

Third, if you are married to a Korean citizen, and she has her National ID card, then the process is much easier. You can get her to sponsor you, but get a copy of her Family Register, you'll need your birth certificate and other supporting documents proving your citizenship and proof of income so you won't become a "social burden". A friend of mine did this and aside from gathering documents, once he and his wife went to Immigration, that portion of the process took only 2 hours (mostly waiting time).

But do your homework and Welcome to Korea!

Good Luck!
