this issue really concerns me. It seems that both sides present verses that are completely valid, but neither of them explains how the verses that support the opposing view point work into their view. is there any thing out there that explains all that more clearly?

I think the entire debate hinges on whether man is totally depraved

I believe you are correct. Man is totally depraved at birth, and has to be taught to be good and do things right. It is his nature to be self serving. He must be taught as a child to share and to be nice to people. Unless he is raised by wolves, his parents or guardians will not put up with that kind of behavior and will at the very least, teach him to be somewhat polite. As he reaches the age of accountability, which is considered to be about 12 years of age, he is developing into the person he will become.

Do you mean gurantees of eternal salvation versus salvation based on conditions of faith and works? What are a few of the verses on each side of the controversy you are talking about?
