Atheism has become more prevelant, but they are still a HUGE minority in America. They are less than 10 percent of the population.

Atheism will fall because science can only tell us so much. I believe the end is near and as the world becomes a much more dangerous place, we will fall back on religion for comfort and go with God.

Think about all the countries that have nuclear weapons. It is during the hard times that people become more religious. I think that the End will lead to more conversions.

I agree, as when they stand before God at their judgment, it will be awfully hard to remain an atheist!

I don't agree. People might turn to religion as a crutch. People should not be turning to religion of out fear. Unfortunately, that is what churches strives on - fear. Why do you think the end is near? People having been saying/thinking the end is near for so many years! You say Atheism will fall because science only tells us much - Science is backed up with proof. Religion is only by faith, heresay. Remember, the bible was not written by God or Jesus, but by men like you and I and I believe like, many others, that what the bible says was not meant to be taken literally. It's subject to interruption.

I disagree. History is showing that Atheism, as a whole, is on the rise. One thing I have to point out.... in the 1st Century CE, Christianity was the Minority (and oddly enough, the Romans called them "atheists" because they didn't believe in Roman Gods).... did that stop Christianity? I'm sure many Romans were saying things similar to what you are saying now, but that did not stop anyone from going to Christianity.

"we will fall back on religion for comfort"...... I find that phrase to be odd and is just as dangerous as you are saying the rest of the world is becoming.

Honestly, I think you are saying these kinds of things simply in the hopes that if you say them out "loud" (so to speak) then somehow that will make it true....

Atheism does not = Science. Atheism is the lack of belief in God(s)... I'm sure there are Atheists out there who are not interested in Science on that level (in fact, I know of one... he prefers History over Science). So if anything falls because Science can only tell us so much, it would be Science.

Since being in here I can see why so many point out that there are alot of people in here that have no idea what Critical Thinking is. And here I just thought they were using that as a mere insult to get a rise out of people. But you have shown me the error my thinking on that one.....

Edit:

I suppose if all the insane religious absolutists were to gain sufficient political control to allow them to persecute anyone who doesn't share their ludicrous notions, then it is conceivable atheism could be eradicated.

That said, religious fanaticism pretty much had that level of control in several places and at several times in history (notably through the Dark Ages and Middle Ages in the West) yet atheism not only managed to survive but, indeed, is probably thriving stronger than ever.

The trouble is, you see, that all the various loony religious dogmas keep coming up hard against reality, knowledge and common sense, and no amount of ruthless tyranny can overcome that for ever.

So I guess the answer is...

you lose.

No I think your way off buddy!

As living standards increase worldwide and the depopulation of the rural areas continues with the corresponding increase in the urban populations people will become increasingly materialistic and selfish.

There will be a worldwide decrease in the birthrate because wealthier people have less children and less and less adherence to anachronistic religious taboos on personal moral issues such as birth control and abortion.

I think all Religion is on the way out!!

Atheism is not based on science.

It is just based on rationalism.

It has been kept at bay only because the religious resort to such extremes to maintain their status. For instance, in a poll last month in the UK 37% of muslims thought apostates should be executed. In the US social and political ostracism is practised instead.

Despite this Christianity is in freefall in the US (1% down each year for the last 15 to 20 years), and paganism (which is often atheism with rituals) is the fastest growing sect, even now recognised at Arlington Cemetery.

Atheism is a minority in America because our education system does not really educate. Even 100 years after Darwin, there are battles over placing Evolution in the classroom.

No, athiesm is not a fad. It is a centuries old viewpoint of reason.

"The world holds two classes of men — intelligent men without religion, and religious men without intelligence." — Abu'l-Ala-Al-Ma'arri (973-1057), Syrian poet.

"To surrender to ignorance and call it God has always been premature, and it remains premature today." — Isaac Asimov.

"God used to be the best explanation we'd got, and we've now got vastly better ones. God is no longer an explanation of anything, but has instead become something that would itself need an insurmountable amount of explaining." — Douglas Adams.

Oh, please let the end come soon.I can't wait for the day that all you "end of days" folks are taken so that I can spend the rest of my life without hearing another darn "end of days" prediction or hear about how current events must mean it is coming.Just go already.

To answer your question, no.A fad is something people embrace because it's popular.Like religion.
