The legal age to buy alcohol is 18, but they'll check you if you look under 21. The story is a silly one - if it's the one I'm thinking of - because the man was in his 60s or 70s :o)

The law says 18.

Some outlets won't sell if they think you are under 21 even if you may be over 18. Some pubs won't admit under 21s.

Interestingly, even if you can prove your age, the seller can refuse to serve you alcohol and does not need to give you a reason. You can also be barred from entry without reason.

These laws are in place to help licensees (pub landlords and shop managers) avoid drunken behaviour.

Depending on the landlord's policy and licence, persons under 18 may be able to enter a pub provided they are accompanied by an adult.

Mild alcoholic drinks such as Shandy or Perry may be served in moderation to somebody aged 16/17 in pubs and restaurants provided the purchase is made by an adult and is sanctioned by the licensee.

You have to be 18 to buy alcohol. If you do not look 21, then you will be asked to provide ID to prove that you are at least 18.

Yes, you do have to be 18. However, it is always best to carry some ID as a lot of places will ask for this if they think you look under 21.
