We should work as long as it takes to get the job done.
If your priority is to work a certain number of hours in a week, then choose a job to match that goal. This leaves the choice up to you. If the law dictates a particular work week, then you don't have the freedom to choose to work more if you want or need to.

Your question doesn't make much sense - you ask how many hours a week we should work for, and then you tell us 40 hours (or at least 40 hours) ;) Make up your mind!
I work 80+ hours a week, and the idea of 35 or 40 hour weeks is pretty low key for me. Some jobs actually don't have set hours (like mine, research) and technically whenever you're not sleeping you're expected to be working, so 80 hours was an estimate. It doesn't feel like work, however; more people should find jobs that don't feel like drudgery and then they'd be less concerned about minimizing their work hours, imo.

40 hours about for a minimum of £10 an hour. I used to only work 35 hours for something like £15 an hour, and that was some years ago, I expect it has gone up a bit now.

Because of the Bus Service I HAVE to use - I gave up driving due to ill health - I am resticted to 35 hours a week.
So saying everyone should work 40 hours a week will NOT be viable.

Truck drivers, in the uk ,used to have to start midnight on sunday and work right through the week, with no time off to sleep, until midnight saturday. This meant the boss did,nt have to pay double time for sunday,AND GOT THE MOST OUT OF THE WORKING WEEK.If you could,nt get a return load out of london,or southern england,he would fix up a part load for the front of the trailer, and then, you would have to carry one of the returning rigid vehicles that was loaded( piggyback)on the rear of your trailer. This was how we worked in those days.So 40 hours basic working week was a godsend.Bosses still expect you to work(as they put it)a reasonable amount of overtime(what is reasonable?).Job tenure is by no means secure these days, the jobs for life with railways, british steel, the co-op,and suchlike have long gone. This means,in general, principals go on the back burner and the boss has the whip hand.

I was a chef and I worked various hours.I got paid if I worked 2hours or 60 hours. 40 hours per week is quite enough but don`t forget there are jobs where hours are unsocial and can`t stick to 40 hours so it can be anything.

I feel we should receive full living wages for a ten-hour week, so we could have the time we need to nurture a good family, friendships, exercise, rest, travel, hobbies, and other personally-enriching experiences.
If everybody could be guaranteed this policy, we'd all be happy and get along with each other. (Until the store shelves run empty and our infrastructure falls apart, for lack of anybody doing the necessary work. Darn. Why does reality always have to ruin our best daydreams?)

Hiya. I think some people on here are assuming you think 40hrs is okay. It sounds to me though that you feel you are being made to work those hours.
Well I think 38 hrs max. Raising the minimum wage also.
People spend too much tome at work and not enough time with their familes.
I think Tamara is very lucky indeed to be working 80hrs a week and it not seem like work!! I don't think there are many
people that could say that.

What do you mean, we have to make it 40 hours?
Every country has different workweeks. Europeans work 35 hours per week.
I think Americans are workaholics.
