Hi, I'm planning to do a road trip around Australia either sometime next year or the year after.

I live in Canberra so I'll be leaving from here.

I'm looking for any suggestions, destinatons, attractions, off the tourist areas including any hidden gems like other attractions that most tourists don't know about.

I've only got a normal car with a UHF CB Radio installed. So can't go off road or anything like normal 4WD driving people do.

If anyone has any suggestions or anything else let me know.

I also have a group on facebook which everyone is welcome to join.

Looking forward to hearing some ideas and suggestions soon.

Thank you

you'd be most comfortable following the sun - so leave canberra in the late autumn - travel north during winter - there are plenty of books about travelling off the beaten track - it all depends on what you are interested in. if you like bushwalking go to the national parks. take the inland routes up the centre - stay away from the east coast & large touristy cities.

If you travel round Australia anticlockwise, you will save fuel no matter how you go - driving, sailing, flying, bicycling, walking - becuse the prevailing winds are such that you will have more tail winds. With the price of fuel, that is something to consider.

An absolute hidden gem is the Tattersalls hotel in Winton in western Queensland. Once or twice a week they fly in fresh fish and seafood from the coast. Dinner is a delight at a very reasonable price and they have an excellent wine list. The people in Winton are wonderful and they have accommodation at the pub at an unbelievably low price. Enjoy yourself. West of Winton is the Dinosaur Footprint site which is remarkable. It is about two hours drive on a very good dirt road to get there but is well worth the trouble. I liked Winton a lot more than the rip-off Stockman's Hall of Fame in Longreach.

If you want to see the "hidden Gems" that most tourists don't know about.

I would get a Toyota Land Cruser or a
LandRover Defender. Fit it out for camping and head bush.

Most tourists today have big caravans and all the really good spots are full. You need to get out and explore the dirt tracks. Stay away from the cities.
