I got a work study for 1500 for the year. They sent me a letter saying that I have to find a job on my own. I already have a job and because Virginia's min wage is so low, so i don't get paid a lot...i know i'm not going to be able to earn 1500 for the whole year.

So i'm getting a second job which pays less but I get to do my homework at hte same time so it's not that bad.

What i'm wondering is (i hate my first job--at the gym) is am I responsible for the work study b/c if its a loan, why are they going to pay me directly. I want to focus on school work so If i'm not responsible for my work study, meaning i won't have to take out a loan if I don't get the 1500, i would rather quit.

The answers above are half right.

The amount of WS your were awarded is the amount you COULD earn. IT IS NOT A LOAN. You may or may not earn this amount based on school work or whatever. You do have to work to earn this and I have never heard of a student that should go out and find a job. The financial office should be placing you in a department usually on campus, but not necessarily. The on campus jobs are usually from departments that are looking for student help. Go back to the office and talk to someone else. Things dont seem right based on what you wrote

A work-study is not a loan. You are paid directly. Your school expects you to use the money you earn in work-study for school related expenses such as books. The 1500 you need to contribute in work-study is 1500 the school does not have to give you in grant money. However, you decide what to do with the money you earn. You also can choose to work or not.

You don't actually have to work when on work study. It's just given to you to better obtain a job on campus, and they only expect you to work less than ten hours, if you do decide to take a job.

It's just to allow you to have spending money, since if you have gotten work study they realize that you may not be able to afford campus activities or other necessities.
