A true devout Christian may lose hope, but would never turn into an atheist. For devout also means pious and pious also means reverence, and reverence means: “A profound emotion inspired by a deity.” When someone has been inspired by God, they have felt His power, and once you have felt the power of God there is no denying His existence.
Atheist are Atheist, because they have never felt the power of God, therefore they believe He is not real, because they can’t see, touch, ear, smell, or “feel” Him. Therefore to them He does not exist. †
