Doesn't the Qu'ran define the trinity as God (Father), Mary and Jesus.
5:116. And behold! Allah will say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah.?" He will say: "Glory to Thee! never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, Thou I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden.

So am I correct to assume that the Qu'ran defines the trinity as God, Mary and Jesus?

Ye sunshine, I mean is there a sura other than 5 :116 that describes the persons of the trinity...It is my belief that Muhamamd thought the Christians believed in three distinct gods as God, Mary and Jesus.

Faz, The Qu'ran teaches against the trinity but does not define the trinity specificly but as defined in sura 116?
If I am understandingthis sura correctly Allah is asking Christ if he told people that he and Mary were Gods with Allah...this does appear to be the trinity the Qu'ran is against but it is not the trinity of the Gospel.
Could it be that Muahmamad misinterpreted who is in the trinity?

Sincere, I am sure the Qu'ran does not endorse the doctrine of the trinity.
I am not sure the Qu'ran understands the doctrine of the trinity.

Sunshine it kind of answers my question, but the docrine of the trinity is specific in who is in the trinity, the Bible trinity is the only trinity I am familiar with and it is Father, Son and Holy Spirit but they are not seperate gods but one God.
Seems the writer of the Qu'ran was not familiar with the persons of the trinity nor the doctrine of the trinity, I would think it would have been specific in that it specificly mentions the trinity but mentions Christ and Mary as being worshiped which would leave a question as to who it is refering to as trinity.

Thanks Sunshine I completely understand your interpretation but you must admit that you are making an assumption that the writer understood the trinity, the writer did not give any detail in the entirety of the Qu'ran does it define what the trinity is other than to say giving partners to Allah, and this sura that ask Jesus, as if God would not have known, If he told man to worship him and Mary, Now it would be presumptious of me to say that this is refering to the trinity but it is also presumtious to say the writer knew who the trinity was. The trinity does not link partners to God it refers to the parts of God as man also has parts because man is made in the very image of the trinity. above the animals who are mere flesh and persish wiht their flesh God made man like himself with more than flesh but also an eternal spirit and these make up a living soul...

God said let US make man in OUR image and made man flesh, spirit and a living soul. This definition of trinity was from God speaking directly to Moses...The Qu'ran says this is evil, the God of Abraham says this is our creation, the Allah of the Qu'ran did not understand te trinity but cliams to be the God of Abraham doesnt this bother you just a little bit?

You mean like this verse...

Al-Maeda:

73 They surely disbelieve who say: Lo! Allah is the third of three; when there is no Allah save the One Allah. If they desist not from so saying a painful doom will fall on those of them who disbelieve.

If that's not what you mean let me know :).

Peace.

Edit: From your question to Fez... No, by trinity it is meant any belief in the existance of a divine diety other then the One God (aside of what name you call Him).

Does that answer your question?

Edit:

I see... but you're kind of pointing out to one verse and you're not really paying attention to the point I'm trying to show you.

The trinity (whether it's God, Mary and Jesus Or God, Jesus and the holy spirit) consists of giving a divine diety to campanions other then the One God. And that is where the belief in the trinity falls apart.

"The writer of the Qur'an" as you say knows very well what the trinity is and knows exactly what/whom the people are worshiping, and for that He tells that there can be no one worshipped but God.

Your belief in the trinity tells you that God, Jesus and the holy spirit are one... but in fact it's three dieties.

The belief in God is strictly supposed to be the belief in one diety with no companians what so ever, and from there Muslims see that the trinity is not the way to worship God, but the belief in Him alone.

I hope you'll be able to understand that.

Peace.

The trinity is a false belief by many christian churches. The Qu'ran is correct in identifying God as the creator alone. Where in the Bible does it say "God the Son"? It is always the 'Son of God' and there is the stumbling block between Islam and the truth of Jesus, being a son and not just a prophet. There is a reason for this that the Qu'ran does not cover,
Regards

In Islam God is The Almighty God, No son, no spouse, and no daughter.
Islam (The Religion of Prophets Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad) teaches us God is unique and absolute power. No Beginning, no end. God can not be less then God.
Look like you enjoy reading Qura'n, but without wisdom.
Did you find any where in Qura'n, endorsing trinity?

No it doesnt. Islam distinctly says that there is only one god with no partners. That verse is simply saying that god asked jesus if he would say to people that he and his mother are godly and to be worshiped. To which he replied that he would never do such a thing as god would be aware of his transgression. Read it carefully then u will understand.

NO it does not, the qur'an says that Jesus is the son of Mary but doesnt say to worship them because Allah (God) is the only one that has the right to be worshipped!!!

Quran and Islam believe only One God. There is no partner, son, shape for God. He is the only Creator, Benefactor and Self-Sufficient One. All other are his creature.
