John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Jesus gives the life of God and the direction to God to men.

And the light shines through through the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Jesus came into the darkened world but the people in the darkness did not know Him.

But those who received Jesus have the right to become children of God, by just believing in His name - John 1:12 This is the good news.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. John 1:1-5 †

To me it is saying that Jesus is God, and that God created all living things, without Him there is no life or light. †

Jhn 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Jhn 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Men prefer darkness over light - that is, their own vain ways. They do not understand God or the things of God (Light).

Jhn 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Similar theme (John 3:19-21):
"Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

Jesus is that Light. He is the Image of God and he came into the fallen (dark) world. The result is that men who love darkness hate him. They cannot stand the Light because it exposes them. Yet there are those who are attracted to his Light. They come to him. Those who come to him, become recipients of eternal life. This is an ongoing process which has been going on since the Light was revealed until now and will continue until Jesus comes again. What a beautiful and deep description. John was a mystic and for that reason his Gospel is my favorite. A picture is worth thousand words.

Blessings,

Jack

I feel that it means all things come from God. In Him is the light of the Truth which is the Word. Without God there is no truth and everything is ugly and dark.

Jesus is the light and he is in you (if you believe in Jesus and are obedient to God) and you need to go into darkness and shine his light, because there might be a person in darkness that your light will pull them into the church and receive the light of Jesus. Jesus walked in cities that were corrupted not in the cities like Beverly hills. If you have his light do not hide it in the church, go out and shine it on people that need it to bring them to Jesus.

DO THE WILL OF GOD
You need to find a home church, be obedient, follow his word, be baptized with the holy spirit, show your self approved and do the will of God (Mark 16: 15 - 18)

2:20. The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (helps) them they walk therein and when the darkness grows on them they I stand still. And if Allah willed He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for Allah hath power over all things

2:257. Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject faith the patrons are the Evil Ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire to dwell therein (for ever)

6:1. Praise be to Allah Who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Yet those who reject Faith hold (others) as equal with their Guardian-Lord

6:39. Those who reject Our Signs are deaf and dumb in the midst of darkness profound: whom Allah willeth He leaveth to wander whom He willeth He placeth on the way that is straight

10:26. To those who do right is a goodly (reward) yea more (than in measure)! No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces! They are Companions of the Garden; they will abide therein (for aye)!

10:27. But those who have earned evil will have a reward of like evil: ignominy will cover their (faces): no defender will they have from (the wrath of) Allah: their faces will be covered as it were with pieces from the depth of the darkness of Night: they are Companions of the Fire: the will abide therein (for aye)!

13:16. Say: "Who is the Lord and Sustainer of the heavens and the earth?" Say: "It is Allah." Say: "Do ye then take (for worship) protectors other than Him such as have no power either for good or for harm to themselves?" Say: "Are the blind equal with those who see? Or the depths of darkness equal with Light?" Or do they assign to Allah partners who have created (anything) as He has created so that the creation seemed to them similar? Say: "Allah is the Creator of all things: He is the One the Supreme and Irresistible."

14:1. Alif Lam Ra. A Book which We have revealed unto thee in order that thou mightest lead mankind out of the depths of darkness into light by the leave of their Lord to the Way of (Him) Exalted in Power Worthy of all Praise!
