Faith and certainty are mutually exclusive.
Gods are beings that feed off belief, and proof negates belief. Let me illustrate this:
You know your postman exists, right? You get letters in the mail every morning, you sometimes see him, you have to pay for stamps. You KNOW he exists. But you don't go and believe in him, even if you never saw him.
With gods, you rarely see anything but circumstantial evidence, so by the definition alone, you're required to believe in their existence, otherwise they are not gods anymore. If you have a certain proof of something existing, if you KNOW for sure, then that's not belief anymore.
Ergo, any fundie who says then know their god exists, that's really sad because that means that they have no faith whatsoever.

I don't know if you've heard the many versions of the " Blind Men and an Elephant ". I tend to see religions as much like the Blind Men & the Supernatural realm (for want of a more accurate label) as the Elephant.
In other words _each_ religion is limited to the small part of the Supernatural it is able to interpret within the limits of their experiences.
I believe that their observations are "true" for a limited value of "true" and inaccurate/incomplete when viewed from a distance.

Quite simply - it's the only faith that makes any sense to answer all questions of life, from origins, history, to purpose of living itself, to yes, even science. That, and other subtle instances in today's world - such as of people being touched and having their lives entirely turned around, from being a druggie/rapist/alcoholist/gay/lesbian/murderer or whatever.
However the way God designed us and the world, and how he operates - is that, since we have free will, and he doesn't want to force people to be a Christian - but to discover truth on their own - yes a little faith is required, but it isn't really hard to realize the evidence in the world around us, if you look for it, and don't just shrug it off as "evolution" or the result of the so-called big bang.
It really tears at my heart to see how many people are falling for evolution... even so-called Christians alike. I'm reading about this in my life science course in a secular university. Despite the fact that 99.99% of people here @ univ. believe in evolution, I am not swayed or the least bit convinced by their views. It doesn't make logical sense, and what's even laughable is that some of the "facts" (that are still taught as fact!) have long been proven false - even by the people who "discovered" them and admitted they were false! (One great example is how human babies supposedly have gills while still in the womb. Complete fraud.)
Further still, it's fascinating to see for instance how scientists just can't figure out how life emerges from a collection of molecules. If we cannot even recreate life with billions-trillions of dollars of research and equipment, how could it have emerged randomly by chance? Honestly, I don't think enough people think this through...
I can quite honestly - and not merely as a cheap statement - say that I'd be willing to stake my life on the truth of my faith.

I dont know my religion is the truth. I just suspect it highly. That, and I've got one hell of an imagination if it is not at least A truth. (I'm a polytheist. Lots of room in the world for lots of truths.)
But your point is well taken, a lot of people do mix up the whole belief and knowledge issue. Even if you dont KNOW, if you just BELIEVE, and it works for you, go with it.

Well... You see... You know that your opinions are better, smarter opinions than everyone else's opinions and as a consequence, you know things you have faith in to be absolutely true.

i don't claim my version of the truth to be the same as anyone else's. the universe is a complex entity, and there are many ways to see it.
