At the time they didn't use surnames as we know them. In Nazareth they would call him "Jesus, son of Joseph", outside of Nazareth they would call him "Jesus of Nazareth".

There were no surnames used that far back. He was referred to as Jesus, the Carpenter's son. Now ater in history, people took the surnames of what they usually did as a trade. So not mocking Jesus her, for he was only known as Jesus, the Son of God, but could have been called Carpenter as a surname.

To the best of my knowledge Jews of Jesus' time did not have surnames as we use them.

Jesus would have been called Jesus son of Joseph or Yeshua ben Yosef.

With love in Christ.

Agreed, no surname because they hadn't been invented yet, kinda like cellphones. Yeshua ben Yoseph=Jesus son of Joseph is how he would have been identified.

Added: "Christ" is a title, not a name. It's the Greek version of the Hebrew "Mashiach" also pronounced Messiah. It means "the anointed one."

Ben Joseph. Just seen Cowboy's answer, He is probably correct.

No, It wasn't "Christ" . "Christ" meant 'anointed one' the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word "messiah". Christ is His designation not His name. Saying "Jesus Christ" would be similar to saying "George Bush, President".

"Ben Joseph" (to use the English and not the Hebrew) means "son of Joseph". Although He was not the son of Joseph He may have had this as His name. We don't know. Maybe, like many today, He only had one name. Maybe He was Jesus Ben Jehweh.
