I came home today and noticed that my new 8 week old kitty had small rice shaped things around his butt. Called the vet, took him in, and they did a fecal sample and say he has tape worms. They gave me Drontal to give him 1/2 a pill. We went out and when I came home I noticed a terrible smell. He had poop stuck all around the outside of his butt. I have a 4 year old and am afraid to let the kitty sleep in our room (where he normally sleeps). I also notice some sort of liquid drippings on the floor coming from where he had been standing or sitting. I don't know what that is!?!? This whole thing is grossing me out, and I don't know what to do. How long does it take the pill to start working? What happens when it does start? Are these side effects from the pill that he is having? And my 1 yr old cat is terrorizing the little one too. Kitten stands up for himself and sometimes starts the fights but, I am afraid that my big boy is gonna hurt my little boy. Anything would help!!!

Based on what you said the pill has started working and the worms are on their way out. This is perfectly normal. He may have diarrhea for a few days. It won't be pretty. Sometime when a kitten has diarrhea or when you give them the dewormer and it starts working it kind of freaks them out. He probably sat on his butt when some of the poop was coming out. Wash his butt off in a utility sink.

You need to set him up in a room of his own for a few days(an extra bathroom is ideal) with a litter box nearby plus food, water, bed of course. He could have accidents as the de-wormer is working because sometimes they get a real sudden urge to go. Also if your other cat is terrorizing him, that's another reason he may not make it to the litter box. Plan ahead.

Ok, now about the older cat terrorizing the 8 week old. The kitten may be holding his own but you didn't get them started on the right footing. An adult make can pack a wallop and this isn't really the way you want them to continue for the rest of their lives. You need to back up and re-introduce them.

Here's some really good articles on what you need to do. Initially it basically amounts to isolating the kitten until the older cat is more accepting:

I'm assuming your older cat is neutered because if he isn't; whole males often kill kittens.

Note: Drontal is for cats

Hope this helps.

It is hard to deal with a sick animal. The medicine is working, It is nasty when it does. It shouldn't last more than a couple of days. Do you have a room that you can put him in? Someplace safe that he can stay in until this passes. For us it is our laundry room. It has everything they need to be comfortable, water, food, litter-box, toys, etc. It is kind of a time out place when our kittens get to be too much to handle. It would give you and the kitten a chance to recover. Make sure to let your vet know that he had a time with these worms as he is certain to tell you to keep him hydrated with plenty of fluids and a follow up dose of Droncit in about a month to make sure the infestation is completely gone. These worms are carried by fleas so make sure that you use advantage or something like that on your pets.

He may have a bit of a diarrhea, due to the worms or the pill. Feed him boiled chicken for a few days. The pill will work soon. You must give him another 1/2 pill in 14 days. Don't worry, these things are common with kittens, don't panic. Keep the kitten in a separate room for a few days if you are worried.

Bring a fresh (less than 24 hours old) sample of his/her poop into the vet. Better yet, schedule an exam and first vaccine visit at the same time. 95% of kittens and puppies have intestinal parasites, so you're most likely right.

I think your vet poisoned your kitten.

Drontal is for DOGS and it is not for animals less than 2 pounds.

Call the vet in the morning and report the symptoms and ask if it is ok to give a dog medicine to the cat. It could very well be working already from what you described.

It is normal for an older cat to resent having a new one in his territory, I saw a really good method for introducing cats here just a couple of days ago; see if you can search on it.

Sounds like the pill is working. We had a pup that had same thing, we had to put her in a kennel for a while, it is dangerous for the children. Call your vet's office and they should confirm, they may even want to re-check. Good luck to you!

Maybe the food it's eating is genetically altered.
