You are right - but...its not that low in calories - it has the best marketing strategy on the market targeting people like your mom who fall for it because dont read nutrition info nore understand it. (its not even whole grain product)
She has to look for cereal that is (comparing to others) high in fiber and protein and low in carbs (especially sugar), sodium and fat.
The best ones you can find in regular stores are Kashi cereals but there are many more in health food stores.

Based on my own experience, the Special K diet needs commitement. After all, you are having cereal replace two of your meals each day. It's hard to have just cereal mainly for two weeks because you want to eat normal food too! If you stick to the plan loyally, then you can lose 2-3 pounds each week. However, you need to be very strict with yourself or the plan will actually make you gain weight.

Special k can assist you in loosing weight and help keep it off too. You still have to excerise to keep your body healthy. It is possible to loose weight on "the special k diet" but that means replacing 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 meals (depending on how often you eat) a day for 2 weeks. You should loose and average of about 2-3lbs a week.

Check the side of the box. I eat special K some times, but I really prefer cheerios. I'm a health nut. =)
Look for sugar and fat. If they're low, or better yet, not existant, then you're golden.
Oh, and keep in mind that if you're not drinking at least 1% or maybe 2%(i prefer skim), then you're not gonna do yourself any good by geting special cerials.

Special K claims to help you lose weight because, yes, it is relatively low in calories....but....you need to read the fine print. It says right on their web site that you need to replace two meals a day with Special K and you still need to exercise in order to get all the benefits that they hype.
You don't have to eat Special K to lose weight. The only way to lose weight is to consistently supply your body with less calories than it needs (via diet and exercise) on a daily basis. Your body will then use its fat stores to supply the energy it needs.

I had tried the special K diet about 4 months ago, and what you are suposed to do is replace your breakfast and lunch with the serving amount of cereal and milk for 2 weeks - it does work, and it tastes great - I used the vanilla almond special K - did it for 2 weeks and dropped 8 pounds, was off of it for about 2 weeks and didn't gain any back, so I did it again and lost 5.....have faith in your mom, it works for those who "dedicate" themselves to it - dedication is everything when wanting to lose weight!!!

The way not to do it is starve yourself, to start with. Just exercise and eat right. I did....lost 90 LBS because of it. Starving yourself won't help at all. Drink more water, eat less before bed, and don't eat for stress are the 3 things I follow and i'm going pretty well if i don't say myself. 90 LBS isn't anything like 5-10lbs so take my advice. If you want anymore details, feel free to email me. But please be patient for many ppl are emailing me about how I lost that weight. I will reply though. ~Adia

if your talking about the special k diet, it works. Your eating it for 2 of your meals, then you have one balanced meal. They say its good because special k has a lot of stuff u need in it, since that is what u will be eating all day pretty much, they say its the best. I lost weight eating any cereal 2 times a day like that... but it gets boreing after awhile.

No, Special K alone does NOT make you lose weight. And calories are not the only thing to watch out for... fat, saturated fats and sodium are contributers too.
