I have had surgery on my jaw and have metal in there. They told me I can not do MRI's. But if I ever get knocked out and can't tell anyone, don't I need a braclet?

A bracelet or necklace would be very helpful. It is a good idea for you to get one or at least carry a card on you at all times stating no MRI's metal in mouth .

I agree with "cowboy in scrubs". The metal in your jaw should not exclude you from a MRI. Medical implants are non-ferrous, meaning they are unaffected by a magnet. I do MRIs regularly on people with artificial joints, sternal wires after heart surgery, many types of vascular stents and coils, pins and plates, dental implants etc.

Also, in the case of an emergency, you will not have a MRI. You will go to a CT scanner. MRIs are almost never used in medical emergencies, due to the long scan times, difficulty monitoring an unstable patient and the dangers of certain implants (such as pacemaker or brain aneurysm clips).

But, if you want a medic alert bracelet, go for it!

I would really confirm that. That does NOT sound right. The metals that cannot be MRI'd are ferrous metals - the metals that are attracted to a magnet. Surgical metals are non-ferrous..and not attracted to magnets (or MRI's)

If you find out they used screws from Ace Hardware that are ferrous, I'd be pissed ..and then YES get a medic-alert.

If you have ANY medical condition that may effect the type of treatment that you are offered, then a Medi-Alert Bracelet is a good idea. As you say, you may not be in any condition to supply the information that they need, at the time they need it.

Its a good idea, i was a firefighter and we do check for those things. They have one, i just saw it today at CVS, it cost less the the engraved ones and its a plain medalert bracelet and it says to check your wallet, you can put the info in there...Also while your at it, put all meds your on and those your allergic to, it helps out alot...You can put your blood type to and people to contact info...We do look in your wallet anyways, to get the cash just kidding, but people are know to keep info there...Any info you can give will help them, help you....

Yes. It is definetely a good idea. But the problem is, will they look for it, while you are unconcious? I sometimes wonder if they even take notice. Try a necklace.
