Because it was traditionally used for the lady to store her gloves in so they wouldn't get dirty while she was traveling in the car. It's outmoded by today's standards, yet the name stuck. Go figure.
If it's bothering you excessively, you can always keep a pair in it.

I keep my manuals for my car in there (in case I ever need to look at them for whatever reason) as well as a case of makeup (although that isn't really a good idea as heat can afffect the makeup) and some random stuff...but during the winter, I do actually have gloves in there.
The reason why they are called glove boxes is because early in the days, women would keep their gloves in there so that they weren't falling on the floor and whatnot. And I'm sure guys probably did as well...obviously things have evolved to the point where we no longer really need to store just gloves in there.

It's from the old days when driving was "motoring". When gas was 23 cents a gallon. The "glove box" was intended for that use. Ladies and gentlemen wore gloves and it was the fashion of the day. A lady was never out on the town without gloves to match her ensemble. The men wore hats too, but there's no place for a "Hatbox!" LOL, the dopes just kept them on.

Years ago a lady placed her gloves in the box while riding in the auto so they would be nice and clean when she went calling on a friend. I use mind for the car manual.

Now it is used for everything from kleenex to handguns, but originally it was where one kept their driving gloves. Just like the trunk originally was anactual trunk strapped to the back bumper.
