There's no way to answer that in under a thousand pages. There have been so many concepts of so many gods, changing for so many people in so many different ways, that to find a pattern would require devoted scholarship.

Ok, obviously you are a non-believer since you referred to God as a "concept". Anyway, the only thing that's "evolved" is the establishment of religion itself. At one time, we were all on the same page in our beliefs. If we get technical, the belief that we all descended from Adam & Eve is now becoming something of scientific interest. Turns out we all possess what is being referred to as the "Eve gene," which links everyone's DNA. There are also new studies on the great flood, which would explain the turn of an "era" or "age". At some point man decided it all wasn't good enough, and took those ideas and started a new religion -- over and over again. The most prominant sign of this today are the denominations of the Christian church. The belief is in the Bible, but the teachings are based on those of John Wesley, John Calvin, etc. Personally, I am a Christian. I was born and raised Methodist, which uses the doctrine of John and Charles Wesley. The point is, God was God at one point in time. Humans took the liberty of creating the generic term "god."

Well he evolved from being "real" into what you call a "CONCEPT" who is much like man itself. A delusional "failure."
