Great question, a million ways to answer. But let me ask a question back that may help you: what do you see as the most serious problem facing society today? Now (keep your answer in mind) what can you do about it (i.e. to change it, to fix it, to alter the course of events that lead to the problem)? Recognize that some things, many things, are out of your control but many are not. For example if your answer is "starvation, especially in a world that produces more than enough food to feed everyone" then there are things you can do about it. Some of these are immediate and some are long term.
My "change the world rule #1" is this: meaningful change is accomplished one person at a time. Start at the most proximate level and work outward. Start with your family, your neigborhood, your city, your county... then move outward. If you are concerned about famine in Africa, move to Africa and make that your most proximate level. You will gain a more sophisticated understanding of what the problem of African famine means and your solutions will probably take a drastically different approach.
Finally, remember that much evil has been done in the name of good intentions. It is not only the goal of making the world a better place but more importantly it is the "how" you go about doing it that really matters.

First I want to say I'm so happy to see someone wanting to get involved and make a difference in someone else's life. It's so great when people realize that not everyone has it as good as we do (and yes, we do have it good!).

There are SO many programs you can volunteer with. If you want to work with kids, children's hospitals, Big Sisters/Brothers, Autism groups, after-school programs, etc, are all great opportunities.

Google the word volunteer and the name of your city. There will probably be a website where you can search for categories like children and youth, animals, homeless, etc.

Big Brother Big Sister programs are great. There are programs that train you to be a child advocate for children who are in foster care or with their family under court supervision. Something cheerful, volunteer to read at the local library. Or, volunteer to read to shildren who are in the hospital. I like the last one. Kids that are in hospitals for a long stay have to get awfully lonely and can use a good escape, even if it is through reading.

What a noble idea! Many people wanted to do the same way as yours but they don't have the idea when to start because they don't have the clue.In your case you have the clue, wanting to touch ones life gives you the idea where to start.Maybe you do some social works,a pre-school or be a missionary that guides children who where lost.Maybe you can also start by doing charitable works in some institutions.Start small then spread it out.

Personally I think the Big Brothers and Big sister programs are fundamentally the best thing we can do as a society. Take care of the kids for a better tomorrow.

Always try to improve your part of the world by helping Habitat for Humanity built homes, clean up a lake or a park near you, volunteer at a community center, or donate old clothes & toys to battered women's shelters. Coat's for Kids should be starting up soon.

You can make a difference one person at a time. I met a homeless person who was living in the woods. He was a paranoid schizophrenic and also extremely intelligent. I started out just by giving him food and eventually made the right connections in finding him state subsidized housing. He now has an efficiency apt. and his mental state has improved greatly. This is the most important thing I have ever done in my life.

Hi there. There are tons of ways to make a difference, as you might already know. You have to look into what touches you and you care most about. For instance, I feel a twang for the elderly and their care. If you feel for a certain group more than another (even though I am sure you care for all), check through your chamber of commerce. They can give you a list of organizations in your area. God Bless you for wanting to make a difference!

The best place to start it is inside one's own home. Taking care of the aged parents, giving good education to one's children and helping out one's siblings if they are in any kind of difficulties. If all of these have been done and everything is smooth, then I would say sponsor an orphan child's education, take complete responsibility of a senior who has no one to take care of them.

If you are really rich, then build good orphanges, feeding centres for homeless, homes for homeless and stuff like that.
