From stories in the news media, some citizens seem to second guess or disrespect the military/ police when they do their jobs, who should maintain law and order in case of local unrest??

First line of defense for myself and my family is always going to be me. I will not leave my safety up to police who may or may not be there when I or my family needs protection. It's not a matter of disrespecting police officers, who in a real crisis are going to be badly outnumbered, but simply being practical about my own safety. Or assisting police by relieving them of the burden of looking out for me and allowing them more resources to protect those who are unable to protect themselves. Basically, I don't have a sheep mentality. I suggest people read more of the private papers of the founding fathers of this country, and learn something of self reliance.

ordinary gunfire should be handled by local authorities. If something like Katrina ever happens again our military should again step in and assist. Its common sense when something of that level of catastrophe is occuring and the military is saying stay indoors you should listen. The people whom complain about the mps been rude or disrespectful are probably the ones out up to no good during a time of tragedy anyway.

I don't trust my local police for much more than harassment. So to answer your question I would protect my own family. I'm a veteran that also has law enforcement experience, I'm not going to wait for the local authorities if my family is in danger.

but if someone or group of people are threatening me or mine the cops may not get there in time to protect

It is natural for people to not like the police, but people don't like being told what to do doesn't change the situation, things still must be controlled. People rebel just for the sake of rebellion but I thank those who enter the thankless field of law enforcement. (I do now, probably not when I'm pulled over though)

well it would be nice if the law could but in the end its up to us all to protect ourselfs usually the law is there after a crime they cant stand at our doors 24 7 im a gun guy and firmly belive in protecting my self and my family cooks dont wait for you to call the law they want to be gone before they get there,id advise yo to go to a gun range and get some advice about firearms and who an provide traing id be happy to if you were in central flordia, but get trainig dont buy one unless you will be responsible with it pratice with it also,i dont disrepect the law at all they have a dirty thankless and often dangerous job but in the end they cant be everywhere,if you want protection in the end its up to you to do it,given the choice betwen being a victim or shooting someone trying to hurt my famly or me guess what the my choice is.check with the law also they might be able to recommend a reputable gun shop and instructor.

My first resource for protecting my children and family falls to me. After that, i would expect the police to do their job as well in rounding up anyone still moving on the front lawn....

smith, wesson and I.
I don't automatically freak out and think because I hear guns I have to protect somebody, like are they coming for me, and why? highly doubtful.

all the cops around here would be too busy stopping drivers for minor traffic infractions to get involved with something real.
