You could go to school to be a teacher, and have a second major in music. My mom did that and she has been a piano teacher for 30 years. She has her own business, and makes good money, and picks her own schedule, and enjoys what she does. You could work in schools as a music teacher, or in entertainment like a piano player for weddings, dance schools, etc

There is actually a lot of work in music. Rock/Pop/Hip Hop stardom is irrelevant as it applies to only a small number of people.

Musicians can teach (everything from kids to training professional musos.
You can play. Wedding parties anything is not a joke, you get paid the same for a wedding as playing in a bar.
You form groups and play. Maybe you are part of a pop group or doing electronica, but you can also be doing jazz (top Jazz musos make a lot of money, drive sports cars and get the girls).
You can do session music, recording adverts, play keyboards for boy bands that can't play etc.
You can write soundtracks for movies and so on.

The options are endless. It is generally a better idea to formally study, but you can also simply play play play.

Well, Billy Joel did it! So why not you?
If you could see if there are any positions available in recording studios for session players (people who perform on tracks but aren't part of the band and fill in when an artist needs a particular instrument on a track) you might get a foot in the door. This job could lead to touring with bands/artitst or even getting your own music out there. you might also consider being a producer or even a teacher.

Actually, there are plenty of careers in that general area.

A good way to jump start that is to go into college for music.

If I were you I'd google some music colleges in your area or anywhere you'd like to proceed your education.

It can help you become something. :D
