You're right. Mike Tyson could have been but he threw it all away and has no one to blame but his self.

When fighting against talented opposition it would most definitely not be Rocky Marciano. Against club fighters and over the hill old timers yes then it would be Rocky Marciano.

Roberto Duran has to be the toughest son of a ***** I have ever seen step into the ring. That guy not only fought on too damn long way past his prime but took on some of the biggest names ever heard with heart! He ducked no one that is the reason he did not retire, he was out to prove a point and by all honesty had the biggest heart of all fighters in the history of boxing!!

Who did Marciano fight that was at his best?

Joe Louis great contender and champion of the 30's and 40's
Archie Moore great contender 30's and 40's
Joe Walcott was a great contender in the 30's
and 40's
Ezzard Charles a great contender in the 40's

Not only that but both Charles and Moore are light heavyweights. Walcott and Louis were at their best in the 40's.

The list goes on and on to how many times I can point out why Marciano lacked the talent to test his skill and why his era was the weakest of most.

Don't get me started on naming who Duran faced while at their best, how many naturally "bigger guys" he faced, something Marciano wouldn't be all to familiar with!

Rocky Marciano never had to go 40+ rounds, furiously slugging as did "The Durable Dane" Battling Nelson. This man could absorb an inhuman amount of punishment and kept coming after you. He also took on bigger p4p punchers than Rocky ever had to face. Terry McGovern(44 ko's in 65 victorys), Aurelio Herrera(49 kos in 56 wins), Joe Gans(89 kos). Plus he fought Ad Wolgast, Jimmy Britt and Freddie Welsh. All hall of famers.

Marciano was tough, but I can think of a lot of fighters tougher than he was: Jake LaMotta, Ad Wolgast, Ace Hudkins, Mickey Walker, JC Chavez, Jim Jeffries, George Chuvalo.

And let's not forget Muhammad Ali and Marvin Hagler, who may have faced more one-punch ko artists than any other champs in history (Hagler- Hearns, Mugabi, Roldan, Hart, Briscoe, etc. Ali- Liston, Foreman, Shavers, Williams, Lyle, Bonavena, M. Foster, etc) and always finished on their feet.

Jack Dempsey was one of the toughest. Of course I admire Rocky Marciano, he had a great heart...and would not give up.

1. Muhammad Ali, the beating he took from George Foreman no one else could have withstood & then had enough in the tank to stop George. Also when he was past his prime he took a beating from Larry Holmes & never went down.

2. Marvin Hagler fought hard hitters like Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, John the beast Mugabi & Sugar Ray Leonard & never went down or ever seemed hurt.

3. Joe Louis always came forward & marked the phrase you can run but you can't hide!!!!

The only guy that really competes with Marciano is Sugar Ray Robinson. Most boxers who are "students of the game" consider him the best, he is also the first to get the "best fighter pound for pound" distinction. Also Marciano beat Louis when Louis was old and past it.

Smokin' Joe Frazier. He went through 3 (or at least 2 of 'em) brutal bouts with a bigger and highly skilled boxer, Muhammad Ali. He survived 6 knockdowns with Big Bad George Foreman in their first fight and 3 more in the second. Beat that, anyone?

Toughest Champion or the toughest fighter.

Toughest Champion that would be Jake LaMotta but toughest fighter that would go to either Joe Grim a former Heavyweight or Sailor Tom Sharkey.

In his time he was, I agree but take into consideration Joe Louis in his prime, Ali-but I think he was hyped up but still one of the top 3, Jack Dempsey, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes I think was a great boxer and that he got robbed, Frasier, Floyd Patterson.
