because in Spanish (as well as in my language the Italian) the proper article is always requested in this kind of sentences.

In nearly every other language I know you would put the definite article into a phrase like this:

Spanish - Odio la escuela
French - je déteste l'école
Italian - detesto la scuola
etc.

So the real question might be: "Why don't we say it in English?"

Because that's the way you have to say it in Spanish. You say literally "I hate 'the' school". It's just the way the language is.

If you think about it, most of the time you do the same in English. School would actually be a exception. You'd say:

I hate the store - I hate the Moon - I hate the woman (that leaves across the street.. or whatever) - I hate the TV program.. etc.
.

Because in Spanish they use the articles - le or la - in places where in English we don't.

In English it is idiomatic to leave out the articles (the "the") for things like "school" "work" "church" but not for most other places. We don't say in English "I hate mall" we say "I hate the mall."

So in Spanish, we do not have this idiomatic usage and so we use articles before places.

"La" is an article, much like "the" in English.
