I do not know if they still have it or not, but oldnavy.com had a cute pajama set. Matching for mom and baby. Also WineCountryGiftBaskets.com has a cute gift basket.

For the mom bring her bath and body works or a gift certificate for a mani and a pedi. As for the baby, clothes is always nice but buy 3-6months and 6-9 months, or diapers and wipes are always a great buy! I also agree with ob/gyn who left a comment, although for me, i didn't mind the visitors, it was nice. If you are a close friend then call before you go or call the husband/BF and see if it would be ok with your friend to stop by and when would be a good time. But do not stay very long most rooms are small to many visitors at what time can be stressful on the mom and who ever she might be sharing a room with. I think that was the only problem with me, my neighbors during my stay had about 10 people in the room with her for what seemed like all day which was really annoying.

Maybe a flower if you really want to give her something at the hospital. I would wait though and if you can cook, bring dinner over after she's home and offer to help around the house. She's going to be extremely tired at first and that's what a new mom really needs. As for the dinner gift certificates, nice idea, but I'm usually too tired, have nothing that fits, and plain just want to stay in the comforts of home for the first couple of weeks. Hope this helps!

All of the previous answers sound so luxurious. That's wonderful, but many new mothers need really basic things. Like food. And someone to vacuum.

What I really want for the birth of my next child?

A hot meal, or a gift certificate to a restaurant that has a "to go" menu.

Diapers, starting at size 1 or 2. They're really expensive!

A coupon for a free house cleaning, or at least having the bathrooms cleaned (you could come over and do it)

And yes, the flowers would probably be very appreciated.

I am an OB/GYN and I believe that the best gift you can give someone while they are in the hospital is privacy. Drop off a gift (outfit, blanket, etc) and a card to the nurses station and have them bring it in to the room. let your friend know in the card that you are thinking about her but want to give her her space. Let her know that you are really looking forward to seeing her and the baby and will call her at home next week. Imagine if someone came to your house and you hadn't showered, your wearing a dorky hospital gown and you are trying to breastfeed.

I can't speak for new Mothers but the best gift I have ever given a friend while they were in the hospital is an iPod or Walkman. It allows them to listen to favorite music and drowns out all the peripheral hospital sounds so they can relax. hope that helps......

Well I usually get two presents - something for the baby and something for the mother. Depending on how much you want to spend - some new fluffy slippers for the mother and some singlets or growsuits for the baby (don't get the smallest size, they'll appreciate a 6 month size rather than newborn, especially for a bigger baby)

I totally agree with 'sloth mom'. Give her a ticket for 'free babysitting for a day' and let her go do her thing, or let her take a nap. I'm a parent of one, and no family around or friends to depend on, and that would have been the BEST present ever. :-)

Something just for her, like a gift certificate for a massage , or a facial anything to make her feel pretty again, she's probably recieved tons of baby stuff from a baby shower or friends and family.
