without throwing up. Especially when I go to brush my tongue. Is there anything I can do to lessen my gag reflex?

To the person above me who said something about why brush the tongue? You'd be surprised at what you find on your tongue if you take a piece of floss, hold it tight, and run it over your tongue from the back of your mouth to the front. TONS of plaque. Everyone. It's just as important to brush your tongue as it is your teeth, ESPECIALLY if you want to have beautiful smelling breath !!!

As for the answer to the question, I'm not sure if this will work, but you can try it, its' what we do for our patients at work.

Mix some salt with some water and use a Q-Tip to rub some on the back of your tongue for a few seconds. Then brush your teeth.

I don't know WHY it works but for some reason it works with most of the people with heavy gag reflexes when we're trying to work on them! Maybe the taste of the salt takes your mind off of it.

I know what you mean about the gag reflex. Of course the reason this happens a lot is simple- you are brushing too far into the back of your tongue (and maybe too fast). My mom's a dentist, and I complained about this a while back too...she told me that it's actually not beneficial to brush your tongue too hard or too far back. When you do, just make sure to brush slowly and gently, and don't aim for the back of your tongue too much, which will be a risk for gag reflex.
If you also tend to gag while brushing your teeth, I'd suggest brushing slower, and more gently. Take your time- I know sometimes in the morning we tend to be in a rush, or to be tired at night, making us want to hurry up...but brushing properly is important, and of course, you don't want to have to deal with the gagging.

I don't think there's really any way to stop the gag reflex when brushing your tongue. It happens to everyone.
You could try not brushing so deep...but then that's mostly where all the germs are gathered....Hmmm

Why oh why all of a sudden there are ads promoting tongue brushing, forget about the tongue, just floss, which is very important, and just brush you teeth, just don't go further back than you have to.

I only have the problem while brushing my tongue. I don't know how to stop it, but it is so weird. I feel very nauseated and gag everytime I brush my tongue.

STEPH,
SCRAPE YOUR TONGUE AND DO NOT ATTEMPT BRUSHING.
WHY?
BECAUSE YOU'RE PUTTING THE BRUSH BACK TOO FAR IN THE TONGUE. THIS WILL ELICIT THE VOMITING REFLEX. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE BRUSH IS TOUCHED TO THE BACK 1/3 OF THE TONGUE.

it's mostly in your mind. before hand you are thinking about gagging so the slightest thing is causing u to. before brushing, set your mind to something else and think about it real hard the entire time you're brushing. this should lesson, if not eliminate, your gagging. good luck.
