101st Airbone Division- used to be paratroopers and members of the 101st graduate air assault school, but "airborn" is just in the name. The 101st is comprised of different MOS' (military occupational skills).
Green Beret- Recon. Specialized grunts who do covert missions. Not as tactical as the Navy Seals, but they can hold their own in combat.
Hope that helps.

Being part of the 101st is really just luck of the draw unless you put it in your contract.
101st is no longer an Airborne unit, but is rather an Air Assault unit. The Airborne name is kept because of the many heroic things the unit did during WWII. There are 4BCTs in the 101st, and many diffrent MOS's. Depending on what BCT he got assigned to it could be pretty tough, but that also depends on his MOS.
The Green Berets are actually SF. And is completly diffrent, and requires you go through selecion and training. GT and PT scores are extreamly important.
I reccomend him talking to his recruiter to get what info he needs about his future plans.

In the U.S. armed forces, the green beret may be worn only by soldiers awarded the Special Forces Tab, signifying they have been qualified as Special Forces (SF) soldiers.
Qualifications
To become part of the Army’s Green Berets, you need to be mentally and physically tough, endure difficult training and face all challenges head-on. In addition to that, you must:
Be a male, age 18-30 (Special Forces positions are not open to women)
Be a U.S. citizen
Be a high school diploma graduate
Achieve a General Technical score of 110 or higher and a combat operation score of 98 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.
Qualify for a secret security clearance.
Qualify and volunteer for Airborne training
Take Defense Language Aptitude Battery or Defense Language Proficiency Test
Achieve a minimum of 60 points on each event and overall minimum score of 229 on the Army Physical Fitness Test
The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)—nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles”—is an airborne division of the United States Army primarily trained for air assault operations.
The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, provides forcible entry capability through heliborne 'air assault' operations. Capable of inserting a 4,000 soldier combined arms task force, 150-kilometers into enemy terrain in one lift, and possessing 281 helicopters, including three battalions of Apache attack helicopters, this division is the most versatile in the Army. For this reason, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is the division most in demand by combatant commanders.

The Army has a group called the Green Berets, they all go to jump school, qualified to jump out of airplanes with all their gear. It is a bit tougher to qualify to be a Green Beret. The airborne is a bunch of soldiers qualified to parachute . The training is physically tougher, but both are pretty tough. Hope this answers your question. By the way, I don't think either of them parachuted in Iraq, so far, but they are there.

If wants to join 101st (chickenheads as I like to call them) then he needs to get Air Assault school in his contract and he should also be able to get Fort Campbell guaranteed. As for SF, you can't really join them straight out, you have to be E4 (SPC/CPL) before you can. So tell him the good news is he can do BOTH.

Please see the links for each groups mission statement. Words from the horse's mouth much better than most opinions folks post here.

Do him a favor ... get him drunk and hire a male prostitute to pose naked with him. Take pictures and send them to the recruiter.
