Not an airsoft, A real pistol. He's 13 years old. Will he need some sort of permit or something?

I live in NY (not nyc)

Also, What store would be selling pistols?

Is there some reason you want him to have a pistol instead of a rifle? As a Dealer, I always recommend a parent introduce their children to firearms with a .22 rifle and a Hunters Safety Course to learn about basic gun safety and safe handling of ALL firearms. This is usually the first steps and a pistol comes later after the child has proven themselves responsible. You as a parent would of course have to be over 21 years of age, and have valid identification and proof of residency. You would have to personally buy any handgun and register it your name , along with meeting the New York state requirements for handgun ownership. ANY Gun Shop for the most part carry handguns, you need only pick one and go there. Check your local state laws and restrictions first.........

Most shooters will have an appreciation for a 1911. They can run in the thousands down to around 400 for a rock island, and it will still be a decent little pistol. Glock aren't sexy but they are good pistols, around 500. A super Blackhawks and red hawks can be had in a variety of calibers and are nice if he likes revolvers. I haven't bought one in years but will likely fit the budget. Here's the thing though, you'll find fans of pretty much every pistol ever made and that's what they tell you to buy. What the say may be totally opposite of what your son actually wants. I know a ton of current and retired military that LOVE military weapons. You may be discounting the 1 thing he actually wants. If it were me I'd ask him. It can still be a great gift without being a surprise and he won't be stuck with something he doesn't want forever just because it was a gift. He's a grown man and will be more than fine with that route.

These guys are right, but if you want us to really answer your question you will need to provide more information.

What kind of pistol does he require, or better what will it be used for. That can make a difference when recommending a store and will definitely make a difference when recommending a certain pistol.

Being 13, I doubt he will require anything that is "Dirty Harry" sized.

Pathfinder, I would modify your statement just a bit, "you are opening yourself to all sorts of legal problems should your son be caught handling a gun at his age".

Most of our kids grew up handling guns and if I remember correctly many of them started at the age of 4 or so. Correctly using or "handling" a weapon will not get you into trouble in any state.

It's the mis-handling that will get you. That is why everyone is recommending the hunters safety class.

Sad....I would really think long and hard before purchasing a weapon for your 13 year old son. Based on the way the question was asked, I don't know if the "governing body" is capable reigning him in using the right knowledge.

No offence, just my 2 cents.

I'd buy a .22 lr rifle, i wouldn't buy a pistol unless you are positive he is mature enough to use one and there will be alot of red tape in NY. keep it locked away when not in use. Make sure he has taken a CEFS course (conservative education firearm safety) or similarly state funded course. For a pistol You need to get the permit and purchase it as he is not of age (21) It will be in your name 'til hes of age. Then he can get a permit. If you have any experienced shooters make sure they go with him to reinforce gun safety. If not take the course with him. If you are pressed on a pistol get a ruger 22 target pistol, reliable and won't wear a hole in your wallet.

Even NY state is very restrictive on gun control. To begin with, you are opening yourself to all sorts of legal problems should your son be caught handling a gun at his age. In most states, a person cannot own ANY type of gun unless they are at least 18 years old. Min. age to buy from an FFL dealer is 18 for rifles and shotguns, and 21 for handguns. There are also local rules and regs. which must be adhered to.

Check with your local authority about the applicable laws concerning the handgun purchase.

Even in New York City I would NOT buy a pistol for a 13 year old. THAT may not even be legal in the most liberal State of the Union. Something about the 'Age of Accountability.' In any case, the parent or person purchasing a handgun for a minor would be responsible and or liable.

Best.

If you buy this for your son it will have to be in your name until he is 21.And I would recomend you keep it locked up at all times unless you take him shooting.I would recomend for you to get a Ruger Buck Mark 22 pistol they are cheap but good and the ammo is cheap as well. You mite want to look in the yellow pages under guns.Maybee find a shooting range that rents guns and offers classes. So you and your son can learn how to operate the gun properly.

Below is a link for NY gun laws.

I would like to strongly second JD's advice. The best and safest choice for a young person learning to handle a firearm is a .22 rifle.

I also recommend a basic firearm course and that you and he take such a course together.

You may want to reconsider & purchase a good used or new single shot 22 Rifle for the time being until he gets older.*

almost any gun store will sell pistols
I am assuming that your son is not new to shooting
I would go with a single action ruger like the new model single six it is 22Lr 22mag convertible just change the cylinder and will last a life time
