Yeap.... they sure can.
Heard of a water rat, a ship rat or a sewer rat?
Well, yes, they are all rats, BUT they are all rat swimmers named for their water sportiness. [Land rats can swim when they want to too.]

Dogs do doggy-paddle, rats do ratty-paddle.

:o)

If you have a rat, it may not want to go swimming, it could be a total land-lover, so don't go forcing any rats to take a swim when they would rather be sun bathing.

Yes, rats can swim but my female rats hate it. If yu bathe them, you should never let the water go over thier head unless there is an area where they can swim over to that is flat. You shouldn't have rats swim unless they like it or if they have to.

Yes but most rats do not like it. My rat doesnt she hates a bath she tries jumping out of the tub and climbing up the shower curtains she hates water she doesnt even like pea fishing. She is crazy! lol But yes they can swim. You know something funny one girl told me her hairless rat loved to swim but her rat with hair hated the water just like my hooded rat, im not shure if its just the type of rat or the rat. But they can all swim.

yes, rats can swim for very long periods of time IF THEY KNOW HOW TO(up to 1 week)! If you have a pet rat and you plan on bathing him, do not fill the water up past his chest, as cute as it sounds to see your rat "swimming", he could easily die if he doesn't know how to swim.

Actually no for all small rodents.

They doggie paddle while they are in the water but they try to get out of the water as soon as possible.

Reason being their fur trap air bubble which enable them to float temporary. Since their fur are fully submerge in water (no more air bubbles to enable them to so call swim), they will drown.

Ironically to have sewer rat and ship rat and thinking that rats do swim.

yes they can, but most rats get very scared if they are in so deep that they can't touch the bottom. if you want to give your rat some playtime in the water, just give him a shallow pan of water with peas on the bottom - he'll fish around and have fun getting the peas to the surface.

yes they can swim, when i owned rats i had one that loved to swim too.

just another tidbit of info, ALL mammals can swim instinctively, even though some don't like it... more of just a survival thing i suppose.

Yes!! But they really don't like it. Please only give your rat a bath every few months. If he stinks, you need to clean your cage more often. My bro has a rat, and he hates to bathe. Please avoid the baths. Just get a wash cloth wet in lukewarm water, and rub him with it. If you ever do give him a bath, afterwards keep him very warm. Good Luck!!
