Won't really make a difference in the afterlife if I'm wrong... but what if people who say there is no God are wrong?

They won't be happy campers.

BEAUTIFUL question! I've been asking the same thing for while. Protestantism is based solely on personal interpretation of the bible. All the responders seemed very nonchalant - "If I'm wrong, I'm sure God will forgive me... blah blah blah."

But isn't Christianity about the truth? Aren't we supposed to be constantly seeking God's truth for us? We live in an era with 2,000+ years of Christian history behind us. Isn't it common sense to sit back and think, "Hm, in 2,000 years, how many different historians, scholars, scientists, religious, artists, etc., have come and gone through the Church, contributing and studying and offering vast expanses of insight and knowledge to the Faith? Thousands? Millions? Wouldn't it be reasonable to think that there is tons of wisdom to be gained to studying their work, learning from them?

"Why then, would anyone rely solely on their own personal interpretation and NOT dip into the near endless well of history we have at our disposal? Wouldn't that be like saying, 'I'm going to be a medical doctor. However, I'm not going to learn from the centuries of doctors that came before me, or rely on the years of research and experimentation that got medical science where it is today. I'm doing my own thing, my own way, and if I fail and someone dies, oops. Better luck next time.'"

Does anyone else hear the soft music from the psych ward or is it only me.

Well since I am a committed Christian, if my interpretation is wrong I still can not lose. If God does not exist I simply die, having lived a life that did not hurt people, I helped the poor, I fed the hungry and tried to live to the best of my ability to the laws of God. So if I am wrong I really have lost nothing. If I am right I go to heaven and serve the Lord for eternity. I gain everything. Now people who do not believe in God or chose to live in sin despite their belief in God if they are right they simply die and they lose nothing also. But if they are wrong they will spend eternity in Hell . Seems like a no brainer to me. One way you can not lose 100% nothing to lose , the other way you have a 50 % chance to lose everything. Come to Christ

I try and not have a personal interpretation. I pray and ask my Father in Heaven if I'm right and if I get a "yes" then I keep the interpretation and if I get a "no" I study some more...

We should rely upon the Holy Ghost for knowledge and not base things on our own interpretation. (See John 14:26)

The whole world's religious interpretation of The Laws of Moses is wrong and my newly discovered scientific interpretation is right.

this isn't even a question. I know my personal interpretation of scripture is wrong, which is why I trust in the Teaching Magisterium of the Catholic Church. The challenge is my personal application of Christian Truth in my life.

Peace be with you.

Then I'm wrong, and I hope that the G-d I have spent my life worshiping is forgiving enough to look upon my life the way I've lived it and how I've treated other people during it, and judge me for that.

Peace

If I was wrong, I was wrong. I am speaking hypothetically here, but if there is a God I'm sure he'll accept that I made an honest mistake. If, on the other hand, he chucks me into Hell I'll be glad I didn't worship the bastard.

In that case, I will trust God's infinite wisdom to judge me on my honesty and sincerity. If I live my life the best way I know how, then I will be okay...God knows my heart and will be fair and just.

Instead of offering her money, I will just ask her out to dinner. How's that?
