I work at Sobeys, a grocery store branch throughout Canada. I'm only just out of high school, still living at home, decided to get a job for pocket change, like movies, and stuff like that. Nothing major. Anyways, I got hired part-time, now they're giving me full-time hours. I feel so stressed out and tired all of the time, and my family, friends and girlfriend say they never see me, and it's true.

I just don't need the money. I talked to my manager last week and told her that I'm taking an online course, and I really don't need so many hours, and to bring me down to like 3 shifts a week, but ha ho, and alas, 40 hours this week, 5 days in a row. Like, there's no need of it. I just want some spare change...

I find it really unprofessional how they can't even work with me on this and how they're just assigning hours to me like my request didn't even matter.

Should I quit? If so, should I even give them 2 weeks? They aren't working with me so why should I work with them?

Well Judy, it's a graphic design course, which as you probably know or don't know, is really strict on the hours at hours. Designing digital art can be as hard as pencil to paper. It does get me money at times, but like I said, I don't need money right now. Full-time hours could be done, but as it is now I'm getting no sleep making deadlines constantly. If I'm working early I basically get 4 hours of sleep. And I mean, is it worth it, for pocket change?

I don't have a family to support yet. All I want are part-time hours to see a movie with some friends, grab something to eat. But they're not necessities in my life. Part-time hours are all I really need, so my question was, if they can't work with me, should I work elsewhere kind of thing? Upon joining I told them school would be intertwining with my job schedule later on through, and they just keep passing it by without any really acknowledgement.

You don't need money, their treating you like crap and ignoring your request. Sounds like you should have giving the 2 weeks notice 2 weeks ago.

Listen you may think it's easy to quit a job and find another job, but finding work is difficult at times especially when you are just out of high school. Just keep in mind being responsible is the most important thing here. Write a letter to your boss, and cc her manager on it. In the letter explain how you enjoy working for the company - but can't work full time anymore...I am requesting part-time working hours. let them know you will be flexible with days - but make it clear how many hours per week you can work example 24 hrs per week. Also let them know when you expect a response by Friday of next week for example. If you don't get a positive response...then at least you took responsible steps to resolve it -- next letter will be a resignation letter explaining why you are quitting - or go up the latter to Human Resources and try to have them take action against you rude boss lady. But be responsible and professional throughout the process.
And try to be very friendly and professional with your bosses boss, so this person can give you a good reference if you need one.

Definitely leave. It's good that you talked to your manager first to try and work something out. But if she didn't really listen to you, that is rude, and they don't deserve you there. You can be the better person and give 2 weeks' notice, or at least one week. That way, in case a future employer cares to inquire, they'll know you gave them notice and it looks better for you.

Definitely put yourself, your studies, family and friends first and leave this job. It doesn't sound like it's important enough to stay there, and you need to focus on your course and chosen career path. Good Luck!

I had a job that did the same thing to me. I was supposed to be part time they scheduled me full time then told me I could not have the days off that were originally given to me, each week.

They have no rights to work you full time because you are not getting benefits of full time position. Right? Take that to them and see what they say.

There are plenty of part-time jobs out there. You dont need to stay at any particular one if you are unhappy. Give the two weeks notice, its not a long time and you will be able to use that job as a reference.

Are your parents going to support you forever? From your question, it doesn't sound like you're spending much time going to school - one online couirse? That should leave you plenty of time to work full time. Welcome to the adult world. Get used to it - unless you are independently wealthy, you're going to be working for a lot of years. Time to grow up.
