*****this is a theoretical question, I'm not wanting to...

Since many Atheists(like 99%) claim that Atheism is *not* a religion...can we ban it?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

So since it says Congress can't pass a law for or against a religion...and Atheism isn't a religion...can we, therefore, technically ban it?

First, yoga is a practice of a religion...so you can't ban it...

Anyway, as far as democrats and stuff goes that doesn't deal with religious stances....well..............it could, I guess....but you get the point.

Marooned on Earth...not technically, I mean, you could ban a non-belief in a God or gods and not specifically mention religions like.

"It is hereby declared that all citizens of the united states must follow a faith, whether Christian or Pagan, whether Muslim or Jewish, etc...etc...etc..." I mean, I'm not a politician and am not very good at wording things....but did you get the jist of it?

Atheism isn't a religion but it's a term I would say to classify a person when it does come to a religious stand point.

But then again you would have it as a freedom of thought and speech, you can vocalize your thoughts on how you do not belong to a religious group in which this case we call atheism .. so attempting to ban it would not only oppose to another freedom we are privileged with but I would say it would be effortless.

My two cents.

The constitution (as stated in your quote) only states that you can't force someone to practice or not practice a certain religion. I suppose, since atheists aren't technically practicing any religion at all, that there is nothing we can do about it without forcing them to practice some religion (which goes against the aforementioned quote).

And, anyway, how can you ban the absence of something?

By banning atheism, you'd be establishing religion, which violates the first amendment--so no, you can't ban atheism.

Also, the right to freely practice religion also includes the right to refrain from practicing, so the "free practice of religion" clause would also be violated by banning atheism.

The rights to free speech, free press and freedom of assembly would also be violated by such a ban.

there is nothing there to ban, they are classified as people who do not believe in any God...and as you stated "congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" this meaning congress can not make any laws ordering people to believe in any God...so therefore no we can not ban atheism because they don't believe in God and congress can not pass a law making people believe in God...and I know your saying you don't want to ban it...but what is everyone's deal with wanting to ban things...seriuosly if we keep letting our government ban stuff we are only taking away our own rights that men and women have fought to give us...we just need to let the government know that they are there to insure our well-being, and by taking away our rights they are not insureing our well-being!

*gulp*
You're theorising about banning what I can believe?
That sounds like about the sorta thing a xian's brain stem would tell him to think.
Another example of xian logic = oxymoron.
It's a wonder an xian hasn't attempted something like this.
Oh, that's right - he wanted to.
G H W Bush: "I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."

Maybe someone reminded him there's this thing called 'freedom of speech'.

Definitly pass a ban.
Arm the police with Faith-a-lizers.
If anyone is caught below the legal limit they will be persecuted to the full extent of the law.

As a muslim,I says no banning to atheism cause they are human also, living and learning.Just because we doesn't share same opinion, it doesn't means we must ban this people,no that is cruel, injustice.Later banning who next?black people?chinese people?russian?thailand?come on we are all human being,we are not evil,I don't think anyone volunteer to be evil, maybe stupid or naive but not evil.Like a child learning and questioning about Life and religion. So I says No to banning.

Atheism is obviously a religion in the respect that it is a 'faith system' as there is no proof there isn't a God. Agnostics, who are open either direction would be the true non religion. Of course atheists should be free to practice their belief system like the rest of us!

Passing a law against non-belief would require the state to establish a law for belief, which is unconstitutional.

How would you propose to ban it and for what reason? This country has freedom of speech and no laws against free thought. Are you a fascist? You didn't put much thought into this, did you? You can't ban anything you dislike, what gave you the idea that you could?
