Most police officers do not have a secret clearance, or any clearance for that matter.
Clearances are for the folks that work for the Federal government in some capacity.
In the Air Force, all of their SP's hold a minimum secret clearance, and it is a simple routine backround check and a credit check, most of the time they don't even talk to your spouse. Anything above that is a lot more in depth.

Messy! Both my husband and I have had top secret clearance. They went back to our kindergarten teachers. They needed information on our parents and since my father worked as a government contractor, he had been all over the world including some places you don't want to admit being these days, Iraq, Iran, Korea, etc..Outside of the paper work and feeling violated through the lack of ANY privacy left in my life, it went pretty well and after all the work, was done relatively quickly.

It is a secret, even to the person getting the check. Try marrying someone who works for the FBI. Everywhere you go, people you know look at you like you murdered someone. But, won't tell you why.
