Marines provided a security detachment on Navy ships. There are still Marine detachments on aircraft carriers today.

During the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Marine detachments would have went to their battlestations, just as the sailors did.
Many of the Marines on the battleships would have been assigned to anti-aircraft guns.

Very few things have been as controversial and contested in American history as the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. I would put the attack along side controversies like the assassination of President Kennedy and other events that have caused doubt in the minds of the American public that maybe the Government might not be revealing all the facts. Events in our history that have kept conspiracy theorists researching and trying to unveil any deep dark secret that has been hidden away by the government. For over 50 years it was common and accepted knowledge that Japan shockingly and without warning attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, significant as it was the only attack on American soil by a foreign enemy until 9-11. To fully understand the controversies and questions that are emerging as more and more information is becoming available through the Freedom of Information Act, we must first look at the attack itself and the events leading up it as it was presented to the American Public. Then take a look at the newly released information that has lead some to believe President Roosevelt might not only have known that the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, but took action to purposely provoke it. Why? Roosevelt, the adamant politician, knew that the more imminent threat was Hitler and the war in Europe. Instead of building public support for entering the European conflict with his well-known powers of persuasion, he relied on the certainty that provoking a Japanese attack would convince America for him. In the early morning hours of December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked the American Naval Base located at Pearl Harbor, which proved to be a pivotal moment in The United States involvement in World War 2. That act of military aggression by the Japanese was an attempt to put a pause on American interference in Japanese Imperialist Goals.

Marines were on the ships for security reasons. We have been attached to ships for over 200 years. They also manned some of the weapons on the ships, like the 5 inch and the anti air and .50 cals. They were not commanding the sailors. In fact they were treated like sh** back then. Unlike today.

They manned the guns. Marine detachments on battleships and cruisers were assigned there to be gun crews. Some also served as musicians aboard the battleships. The use of the bugle to announce different ship's evolutions was common. One Marine bugler survived the attack on USS West Virginia. For many years, until his death in 2004, he was the one who placed the fresh flowers in the urns at the Arizona Memorial every week and was deeply involved in the activities of the Pearl Harbor Survivors' Association in Hawaii.

Same thing as the sailors. Most were asleep or going to church at the time of the attack. They responded to the attack as best they could, same as the sailors.

They each had a battle station as a part of their General Quarters assignment. They manned their stations and fought and died like men.
