I really want some good answers on why people think driving a RACE car around a track at 150 MPH with 42 other drivers for 4 HOURS in 115 DEGREE interior is not a sport. I sure don't know how its not.

If you ever think that it isn't a sport, sign up for the Richard Petty experience and drive for 30 laps. Just driving a 160 MPH for 15 minutes in a car like that is nerve racking and you aren't dealing with traffic, 4 hours, heat, etc.

NASCAR *isn't* a sport ... not because proper motor racing isn't a sport (it is), but because NASCAR isn't proper motor racing. To qualify as a sport, there needs to be a clear and consistent set of rules that don't change on a weekly basis; otherwise you aren't allowing fair competition. NASCAR is far too contrived to qualify as sport -- any advantage gained by doing something better than the other guy is nullified by some stupid contortion of the rules the next week.

And I don't care what form of racing you're involved in, intentionally spinning a guy out because you don't have the skill or the stones to get around him cleanly is as unsportsmanlike as it gets, but that crap is not only tolerated in NASCAR, it's actually encouraged.

NASCAR is about as much a sport as the WWE is -- hillbilly theater that requires some level of atheltic ability on the part of the actors is about as close a description as there is.

First of all, they go much faster than 150 mph, secondly, 150 is more like the temperature inside of the car, and lastly, those who do not think that racing is a sport, probably think that fishing is, (not knocking real fishermen, just the ones who use it as an excuse to get drunk), they are probably the same people that think G.W. Bush is an athlete.......

Because people drive cars every day so how can THAT be a sport! Dorky little cars but non the less, they dont kick a ball or run after a ball or hit a ball but maybe once every 5 years at a family reunion so doing that is really hard to them.
At the family reunion, no one drives anything cool there. The host isn't offering rides on the family go-cart because it doesn't exist, and nobody's watching the race on TV.
They snair at racing because they dont get cars or the sport. So they only get stick and ball sports while we get stick and ball sports AND racing. People hate what they don't understand.

I respect race car drivers. I really do.

but my definition of "sport" involves understanding how the drivers "physically train" and "improve their skills" during the offseason. if they can prove to me that racing requires some fitness training and specialized training, I would respect it as a sport. in the meantime, I just consider it a kinda hard "concentration and endurance test". I just can't consider "sitting and pushing a pedal" that physically draining. those dudes jump out of those cars and do backwards flips and climb fences like they are fresh young school yard kids. they sometimes drive a race on Saturday nite and then on Sunday morning! its not physically draining at all, its just hot in their seat.

btw, I didn't consider golf a sport until I read that Tiger weight trains and can lift like 400 pounds and putts like 1000000 balls on a putting green! now that's training!

They're trying to justify what they don't understand. As Hemmingway has said, auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing are the only sports. The rest are just games.

NASCAR is a sport but it is not real racing. True racing is road racing and rallying. That is real racing. I do not find going around an oval for 200 laps true racing making the same right turn. What the hell? In Formula One you have turns that go left, right, s-curves and hairpins. Does NASCAR has that? No. Rallying you drive on actual roads mostly dirt roads or public that are closed and navigate yourself to the finish in the fastest time. Rallying is by far the most dangerous type of racing as one bad move and you may be dead. So if you want real racing I suggest watching Formula One, MotoGP, or WCR.

I don't know why either.
Some say it isnt because they aren't chasing a ball...haha..no...they are chasing a car going 115 mph!!!
Other's say it doesn't require physical activity, just sitting on their butt for hours. Haha....alright..i'd like to see them try it!
I believe it is a sport. i mean you can find it under "Fox Sports" and "Yahoo Sports".....well if you find a really good answer....post it. :]

Some "jocks" think NASCAR isn't a sport, because there are no men chasing a ball around a field. MOTORSPORTS RULE!

Probably because they drive their car like a grandma and do not think that NASCAR drivers exert any further energy.
