This happens to a lot of people- the pressure from the braces can cause your gums to become tender, which can be made worse by the fact that for many, it's harder to floss/brush properly with braces on. But anyway, practice good oral hygiene- brush properly (as in at about 2 minutes, all parts of your teeth, including the very back)..you'll want to be gentle since your gums are sore, but still be thorough. Floss regularly, before going to bed....and contrary to what some of the comments say, don't use listerine. It has a high alcohol content. Go to your general dentist or periodontist, and ask for "Peridex" rinse - i think it may also be available at drugstores. If not, see if there's something similar at the drugstore. It is formulated to treat gingivitis and other causes of sore gums. It's great- I also used it a while ago to clean the area where my wisdom teeth were pulled, as my gums were also tender at the site. Listerine is pretty harsh, but peridex is much more gentle, yet effective. if you're looking for a regular drugstore mouthwash, I would highly recommend using ACT. My mom is a gum surgeon, and she recommends using this, as it has a lower alcohol content as Listerine, but is also a very effective, safe product to use. Rinse with that once a day, before bed.
Even after your swelling goes down, continue to have good oral hygiene- brush twice a day, and floss at least once a day.

The inflammation is temporary. Just practice good oral hygiene consistently. Make sure you floss. With time the swelling should subside.

they are probably inflammed and all you can do is practice good oral hygiene habits...brush 2 times daily, floss at least once a day and rinse with Listerine...its the only brand we recommend in our clinic. thats the only reason I can possibly think for your gums getting bigger.

Sorry to say that you can't make them get smaller. It's just normal swelling. I know personally that it sucks but it'll all be worth it you'll see!!

You have to brush and floss your teeth regularly. Also use Listerine mouthwash. Only Listerine though not any other brand.
