You will need a lower gear than normal, so that you are peddling faster, but smoother. This works better for long hauls than standing up on your pegs.

If your front wheel lifts, invert your stem, so that your bars are lower and your weight is over the front wheel more.

Stick your but backwards, lean forward and pull.

Clip peddles also help, as you can use more of your crank rotation to get you up the hill.

Build up speed as you approach the upslope. What you do next will depend on what kind of bike you ride.
If you have gearsets, then shift to a lower combination before you hit the slope--for example, smallest chainring with largest sprocket.
Shift your weight a bit forward by sitting on the fore edge of your seat and pull on the handlebars. This puts you in a better position to power-pedal. This also works if your ride a single-speed.
Try raising your seat height. This will lessen stress on your knees.
Lessen the weight of the bike by replacing some parts with lightweight versions.
Other than that, just keep on pedalling and one day, you will have built the strength and stamina for climbs.

+a million for hybrid with 700c wheels/tyres. may well be nicely worth finding in at your interior of reach self reliant bike keep - the only close to me many times has secondhand motorcycles on the marketplace. That way you've got extra beneficial on your funds for helmet, lights furniture, panniers, etc.

Drugs!....... steroids, EPO, salbutomol, synthetic testosterone or someone else's blood in your system. Take your pick. If it works for the professional cyclist, it will work for you. You'll be climbing Alp d' Huez like Floyd Landis.

Shift down and spin up the hill. It's slower, but you don't get tired from straining your way up.

How? Pedal.

You need to build up your stamina. Take each crank one at a time, push yourself and you will build your stamina up.

Why would it be getting more difficult? Thanks for telling us it's harder riding up hill than down. I'll write that down on a piece of paper and keep it in my pocket when I ride. As for overcoming your pain, suck it up. In our universe going up hill can be hard.
