I have an 8 or 9 year old male yorkshire terrier. I was home today all day and i noticed a difference all of a sudden in him. He normally will be right at my heel following me all over the house, but today he wouldnt make an effort to get up. Also, when he hears the door open or hears the mail lady put mail in the mailbox, he will just go crazy barking and today he just layed there. When i pick him up, he whimpers like there is something wrong with his back leg(s). He tries to go down the stairs to the back yard sideways and very gingerly and he walks gingerly too. Any ideas because im kinda worried about it.

Take him to the vet. There is no way ANY of us could help you or him. he needs checked out by a vet and now would be a good time.

TO THE VET! Of course! That is a no-brainer, right?!

This is no time for "home remedies." He hurts and is not feeling well which is why you have noticed his condition. Take him to the vet! It could be a back problem or leg problem or whatever, but asking unqualified strangers on the internet who haven't even seen him, let alone examined him, is NOT going to solve it! And it is your dog's RIGHT BY LAW to receive proper medical care. So stop wasting time on the computer and get him some help. Stop procrastinating; he's in pain.

He needs some doctoring - take him to the vet as soon as the vet opens in the morning. Could be nothing, could be something but the only one that can be sure is the dog's doctor. Don't wait - go.

You're describing an obvious problem with the dog--pain and legs. A vet needs to examine him to see if there's a nerve pinched, if he's got a cracked bone or splintered spine, or some other problem going on.

The dog is in pain, please make an appointment (and soon, not next week.)

When your dog acts "off" like this, it's time to go to the vet. Your dog is acting more like he's in serious pain. I'd call tomorrow and get in to see them as soon as possible.

Something is wrong.

Sounds like it's time for a trip to the vet. No one on this website will be able to diagnose your pet. And no one here can treat him over the internet.

He may have pulled his back out. He may have colitis of the bowel area. His back legs may be going on him but I doubt that it usually comes on gradually. A cortisone shot will help him so much for his back. Remember your dog should be as well treated as your child so please take him to the vet>

I can't tell you what the problem is but please take him to the vet as soon as you can. His energy level being so different paired with him showing signs of being in pain are not good signs.

Sudden change in behaviour + animal seems to be in pain = take him to the vet.

Did you really need to ask?
