A well lit exterior of a house is always a deterrent to thieves or prowlers so I leave mine on all night but some people prefer to have the motion activated ones for economy sake.

we always leave our front and back porch lights on 24/7. they are motion sensitive so they come on quite bright if someone comes to the door and are on extremely low if there is no activity outside. when its dark out and if someone is at the door its easier to see them in the light and if we turned them off in the morning we'd forget to turn them on again at night.
the cost of running lo-watt energy efficient bulbs is minimal so we don't worry about that aspect and we are energy frugal in many other areas! besides there are no street lights in our area what-so-ever and without the porch lights it is so dark you can't even tell if you have your eyes open or closed! lol

Today we most use a motion light on the porch, when you approach the light goes on. It keeps the bad guys away and saves electricity. Do you leave your fridge light on when you close the door?

We don't have a porch so to speak but sidelights on either side of the front entrance as well as a post light. The post light comes on automatically when it gets dark but I like to have the sidelights and the foyer chandelier on at night because it presents the house so well. We turn them off when we go to bed.

If you live in town I would leave the light on especially if you have any crime at all.
This also helps if your away and want people to think your home. If you leave them on only when your gone "pro" criminals will know this and break in but if you get into the habit of leaving it on all the time they will be less likely to try.
If you have no neighbors or live away from people then I wouldn't leave them on.

It is a good idea to leave the light on as a
crime deterrent, a better one to use
a lower wattage fluorescent bulb.
Better still to have a motion-detector flood lamp, that can be
adjusted for sensitivity
so that stray cat doesn't set it off.

i personally think people should only turn on their porch lights for a reason and that being not just because it is dark.
For a visitor or if your outside doing something.
It would be just wasting electricity if you had it on all night for the frogs or the darkness.
I mean really..!

It's all up to you. I have lights on both side of my garage door, they come on by timer at night and turn off in the morning, I have a pathway light that comes on when it senses someone approaching and I have a light by the front door that I turn on when we are expecting guest. I think that it makes them feel welcome. But what lights you turn on is totally up to you. Just remember to use the new energy efficient bulbs.
THINK GREEN.

I turn mine on when I am expecting someone to visit. Otherwise I turn it on before I answer the door to be sure I know the people ringing the bell or knocking.

I wouldn't unless you're actually expecting someone, or if you leave the house, so when you come back your sidewalk/porch is lit when you return.
