I've been into photography for almost two years now, but I've only read or learned anything about it recently.

I've got a basic grip on exposures, f-stops, shutter speed, etc. etc. but I still want to know more.

Can you suggest any books for me at the level I'm currently at? Anything that might come to mind as "essential".

antoni m is right - take a photography course at your local high school or community college. Another option is to take the New York Institute of Photography correspondence course (nyip.com). They have been in business since 1910 so they must be doing something right.

You might find the book 'Object & Image: An Introduction To Photography, Third Edition' by George M. Craven useful. It should be available somewhere on the internet.
