if i roll 2 dice, what are the odds that a 7 or 8 will come up? the answer i'm looking for would be something like 1 in 4 or 27%, you know along those lines.

there are thirty six different combinations that may be rolled at any given time, six of which result in a 7, and five of which result in an 8.
so to answer your question, the odds of rolling a 7 are 6 to 1, and the odds of rolling an 8 are roughly 7 to 1.
house advantage in craps comes from 7, or "craps", having more combinations than any other number acheivable by the die.
