Because when im called dude on here by a female I take it as being talked down to.

Guys call guys dude. Not women.

Why say it?

I normally don't call a man I don't know "dude." If I do, and it's an extremely rare occasion that I do, it's because he comes across as friendly and approachable.

When I was growing up, I only had one brother. We were Navy brats and pretty much the only constant friends that we had were each other. When one of us made a new friend, we'd all hang out. I picked up the "dude" talk from my brother and his friends, back when I was "one of the guys." Sometimes, I slip back into that and "dude" pops out. It's never meant to be insulting or belittling, but I can see how one might take it that way. I don't know how other women might feel when using it, but I'm willing to bet that most of them use it for the same reason I do and mean nothing insulting by it.

I think maybe this depends on the way you speak. I am a girl and when I was a teenager I used to say 'dude', 'awesome'...things that people didn't really say too often at that time (and I live on the East coast), but I just liked to talk that way. It never occurred to me that calling a man 'dude' is inappropriate...guys do it, so why can't girls? And people call a general group of people 'guys' (as in 'hey, you guys') even though there are women in the group....most women aren't bothered by this. It is just part of the way people speak. I really don't think there is any deeper meaning to it...some people just call other people 'dude' :)

I think the term is offensive no matter who uses it. People have names, not slang terms. If you are going to use it with guys, expect that others will use it as well. It isn't really a very polite word regardless.
