unfortunatly the female singers success is maybe about 30% on actual talant, and the rest on looks and style and fashon and whether or not the papporazzi totaly trash her. the songs that the singer picks to sing is also very important to determine how many fans or what kind of fans she will have. but most of the career is pretty superficial and has nothing to do with the actual goal of the career itself, singing. generaly female singers with real deep messeges and strong opinions get thrown out pretty fast, or atleast gets a spot way in the backround away from the MAJOR glitz and glamour and publicity, and probly have to rely more on their actual music than the others( they will get less photo shoots, magazine articles, tv apearances...etc)

Style,Class, personality, looks, voice structure, voice quality, voice ability, and practice. Also lessons, and sometimes how you dress in some cases. Performance, stage production, and song performance. Physical and Emotional. If your not really into the song you are likely not going to do good at all. If you are getting down with it, you are more likely to do good. Voice stability is also a plus. Practice is always a good thing. Song selection is very important. It depends on what songs your voice is good for. My opinion is that you should take lessons, practice voice stability, structure, performance and get on stage in front of a school or a town the more people you have around when you are singing the more you will feel comfortable when you are singing around other people.
Hope this helps.

First of all, it is voice. If you sound awful you are not going to get anywhere, unless you are William Hung. Then it is going to be looks. People don't care about voice these days unless you are beautiful. Take a look at the current popular musicians, the women all look very similar, thin, tall etc. Then of course it is choice of songs. If you have annoying sounding songs, people are going to pass over you on the radio.
Controversy will prevail once you have everything else down. To assure your place on the radio, try nailing yourself to a cross, driving with your baby on your lap, and feuding with other musicians. Toodles -s

Honestly, it should be vocal ability but in today's society the answer is EXPOSURE. Who has the best PR and Market Value is who will win. Ashlee Simpson and Jessica cannot sing but they can SELL. J-Lo cannot sing but she can SELL. Ashanti could not sing but she could SELL. The list goes on.
It should be about vocal ability and style though but Marilyn Monroe forever changed that. She could not sing worth anything but she looked great.

You need an orginal voice..if it be husky like melissa etheridge or strong like celine..theres so many varities here it needs to stand out in some way..I think you need an outgoing personality (you have to be to get up there in front of everyone)
You also need to be orginal and unique people have to see something in you they do not see in everyone else.Something has to make people notice you.Looks help obviously!

She has to look good. This is the video age. She has to have a certain charisma about her. She has to embrace the public and enjoy the spotlight. Her singing voice is secondary.

Definitely her voice! How she portrays herself. How she dresses, meaning is she just getting to the males or will the females enjoy her music as well.

Pretty, stylish, good music, dance move, and a great voice and her voice doesn't have to be like Mariah Carey's but just a good voice to dance to.

Looks, style, personality, actual vocal range, and lyrics with substance other than the mindless "make you wanna dance" pop music on the radio.
I'm tired of hearing half-baked singing efforts on women and men who you can plainly hear have to be autotuned for their singing to match the instrumental tracks behind them.
