to give you the impression there are people enforcing the laws of society.
unfortunately, most cops want to meter out justice by themselves with no sense for social calm.
people breaking into houses at 3am?

Sometimes I rail against police tactics in USA, but at same time it is nice to live in a country , for the most part, where the police are not corrupt, inept, or criminals themselves. Take a look at Iraq today and that is a good example where law and order has went out the window, people really on armed thugs for protection, etc. There are animals out there : intolerant bullies, racists, gang members, etc, the only thing stopping them is the law and the cop representing the law.

Unfortunately police are necessary because people don't care & disregard things like respect, personal property, life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness. And they're also beneficial to keeping the city budget out of the red by writing traffic citations.
Regarding Tallerfella's comment.... when somebody's breaking into my house at 3:00 am.... my .44 magnum is much more effective in dealing with the situation than a phone call

I think it's great to have police. But you should still always be allowed to arm yourself to protect you and your family.
No matter how much money is spent on police departments. The police cannot be there for you within 90 seconds to prevent a crime.

There are basically 3 types of people in the world. There are Sheep, Wolves, and Sheep Dogs. The Sheep Dogs, are the ones keeping the wolves at bay. Ask yourself what happens if there is nothing to deter the wolves, and I think you will find the necessity for our police.

I think so. It's kind of nice that there are people out there trying to keep things from falling apart. If here were no police, who would bring in murderes and other law breakers?

police maintain the poor=rich equation. they also suffocate dissent over asinine political endeavors. without cops, no one stops the poor guy from killing the rich for his jaguar. without the cops, no one stops the angry, red-blooded, patriotic, god-fearing citizen from sniping our lousy president. Without cops all order becomes disorder. might makes right and all the stupid equality and freedoms go out the window. We may not like it... but, yes cops are neccesary.
