its a New Process 435 (NP435 commonly called). it wasnt an overdrive manual tranny, its a 3 speed with a granny gear, so technically you could call it a 4 speed, with 4th gear being 1:1, which isnt an overdrive.

BTW New Process was the manufacturer, now known as New Venture Gear, which has been bought out by Magna International.

FYI, Ford, Chevy, and Dodges all used NP trannies and t-cases back in the day, Ford till the early 80's, Chevy and Dodge still use them, just under NVG now.

There were 2 transmissions offered, one is called Overdrive-4, the other is the NP435. To tell the difference, look under the vehicle at the shift linkage. The Overdrive-4 had linkage on the side, whereas th NP435 had a direct top mounted shifter.

I actually have a 'ninety 9 Ram with a 318, I even have put in a hiflow convertor, 3" piping back, hiflow muffler, curler rockers, Superchips programmer, headers, M1 intake manifold, low temp. thermostat, 24# Ford Mustang injectors, and a around airfilter. I even have 37" Goodyear MTRs with 4.fifty six gears (4.88's werent out on the time i did it) and 5" suspension & 3" physique strengthen. around city the capability is high-quality, would desire to apply some greater on the line, and in the slop it isnt all that undesirable. you are able to bore and stroke the 318's to 390 ci, the 360s to 408, 426, or maybe 440. the 390 and 408 will often value you around $4k+ to do it your self or $6k+ in case you have it equipped for you. or you will detect a 360 from the junkyard and purely use it.
