I have always been interested in learning a language, possibly Latin, Polish, or Gaelic, and I have heard that college classes don't really help and the Spanish class I took earlier in high school, I passed, but retained nothing from. I am seventeen so it is kind of late for me to be learning a language but does anyone have any advice on the best method?

Well, my college classes do help. I'm taking Intermediate French (3) right now and I love it. Learning languages is not easy for most people, even worse if they aren't interested. Through my way to French 3 (1 & 2) I've seen a lot of people who didn't care about it and didn't learn a thing or got really desperate, so what I can conclude is that I'm still there (our class is so small) because I love it. So I think it's good that you have the motivation to learn, that will help you a lot, so go ahead and sign up for a class at college.

If your college doesn't have advanced courses, try going to a private language institute, or a semester/year abroad could also be very effective.

Also, as an additional help try getting a Pimsleur program for the language you want to learn. They are audio classes that make you repeat things like crazy, but that way they get burned into your brain.

well, i know it's not always possible but you could always make friends with someone who knows a language you're interested in. Or you could go overseas and do one of those exchange programmes for some time, that really helps a lot (probably the best way to learn a language actually).
But I think college classes are great, if you practice with the lecturer and other students in the class, you learn heaps. good luck anyway~

My English is not SO good, I never take a good class of English but what I learn I try to practice every time I can ( as right now ). I pay attention to English TV shows too. 2 years ago I was planing to travel to Germany, so I star to hear a tape of German classes, I understood just a 2% bbut was easier to say somethings like "Ich spreche kein Deutsch " - "No hablo Aleman"... Buena suerte !
