He probably doesn't have a drinking problem. Maybe he drank a beer before the game. As long as he is not too drunk to coach and do his job correctly, then there is no problem. Since he is of legal drinking age, there really isn't much you can do about it as long as he isn't offering any to his players or your son, especially would be a concern. Basically, as long as it is not impairing the coach's behavior and judgement, it's fine. Just because your breath smells like beer doesn't mean you're drunk or have a drinking problem.

How old is your son? Is it a pee wee league or high school ball?
Do you have any friends who also has a child playing on the team? If so, does that child smell the hooch too? If you suspect the guy is hitting the cough syurp, ask your son when you pick him up from practice and on the night/evening/game (whatever) he confirms it, walk up to the coach and strike up a conversation and see if you can tell.
Ask him if "half hearted has a hyphen?"
I'm sure it's something that bugs you (as it would any involved parent) but i would be sure to practice due diligence before you do anything.

different people smell different -- i can't drink a beer or you can smell it on my breath across the room -- but i can drink wine by the gallon no problem. its important not to jump to conclusions on things like this -- it could be damaging to his carreer if you jump the wrong direction. i would try to find another coach at the school you think might be sympathetic to your cause and handle the situation like an adult. once you pass it drop it. i wouldn't let my child in a bus the coach was driving but if he seems like he can still reasonably coach then it might be better to forget it. the biggest issue is really your childs safety -- if that ever becomes an issue then you should definitely do something about it.

I don't think it is your place to confront the coach on his supposed drinking problem. If he is doing his job as coach and not coming to practices and games drunk and belligerent than you should let it be.
If you really do not like it than pull your son off the team and ask for a different coach. He has the right to have a drink(he is an adult) be it 5:00 in the afternoon or 7:00 in the morning.

Have you smelled beer on his breath? My son always says that people have beer breath regardless if they have been drinking or not. Maybe he is confused about the smell of beer or just plain bad breath.

maybe he just has bad breathe and your son equates that with beer which smells really bad to kids. Anyways, don't make any accusations untill you see/smell for yourself.

Where is the proof that he's been drinking other than the fact that his breath "smells like beer"?
