Hey, The puffiness is all part of the normal process. I don't know if you have plans of breeding but she is too young and immature in her first season. Sometimes males will come from miles away so be careful not to let her have her freedom until her season has past which normally lasts about three to four weeks. She will bleed for about 7 or 8 days and her discharge will turn clear and that is the time she will be receptive to a male. That is where the puffiness comes into play. The reason for the swelling is so she could receive a male and not hurt her. If she is purebred and you plan to breed her, she will become mature enough by her 3rd or 4th season. They are in their own world when they are in heat so watch her closely cause she will take off in a split second. I am going through what you are also with my Lab. Hope that gets you close to what you wanted to know. Dennis

A spayed female does not go into heat however some do exhibt some of the signs.

An unspayed female going into heat means some or all of the following: females vary...

swelling of the vulva
bleeding
some females hump others
flagging
hunching back
aggressive with other dogs when normally they get along

9-16 days they are able to be bred. Some sooner; some later...so if pups is not part of your plan watch her.

This is the time when she can get pregnant. You should get your dog spayed before her first heat cycle. It will ward off lots of health problems down the line for her such as breast cancer and a uterine disease. If you wait until after the first heat she has a 25% chance of getting cancer. Best to make an appointment asap. They can get spayed prior to 6 months. Mine is getting spayed and she's just shy of 5 months.

Going into heat for a dog means that they are ready to be mated and have puppies. If you don't want them to continually go into heat, you must spay them.

When a female goes into heat, it's like "that time of the month". They go into heat about every 6 months and it lasts about 3 weeks. If you get her spayed, she will not go into heat, and I highly recommend it.

When a dog goes into heat it means she is ready to breed in order to become pregnant. She will have a bloody discharge for about three weeks much like a period. It happens approximately every six months.

It means she's ready to "mate" during that week. Getting her "Spayed" will prevent that from happening- & keep her from EVER having puppies...

going into heat is like having her period. when they spay them they remove the uterus so she can't get a period.
