I have two cats and am moving to an apartment with an inside stairwell which goes from ground to second story. THe problem is that it has a wall around it from which the cats could fall and/or perch on precariously.

One of my cats just jumped from the THIRD story balcony railing! My little social butterfly saw my neighbor out on the grass playing with kittens and decided he just HAD to be down there, too!

It surprised the heck out of all of us! But he was just fine!

If you don't want the cats up there on the railing, the best thing to do is line it with crinkled aluminum foil or double sided tape for a while. Cats HATE jumping onto those things and will learn not to go up there as long as they think it will be there.

>>Don't worry about it, cat's are fearless about heights by nature and have the balance to back it up. Besides, cat's can fall from four stories and not get hurt so don't worry about two.

This is absolutely not true. While cats are very good at jumping, it's not true that they can always do so without hurting themselves. That's just Disney garbage. I doubt a net will work, but the other poster's idea of using aluminum foil to keep them off the wall is good. Cats hate foil.

Don't worry about it, cat's are fearless about heights by nature and have the balance to back it up. Besides, cat's can fall from four stories and not get hurt so don't worry about two. You could put up the net to keep him out though. I have to make mine go through a security check point to make sure he's not bringing anything dead in or worse yet something that he's not given permmision to die yet, because he's not done playing with it.

Our cats kept sitting on the high riser next to the stairwell and fell off it a few times, so for their safety I put bottles side by side on it so they coulnd't get up there to get in danger. It's kept them off pretty good.

They can get seriously hurt if they fall and don't land right, especially on stairs. Broken teeth, broken lower jaw, snapped leg bones, a damaged spine---they're able to do a lot of damage if they fall and don't get their feet under them, especially landing on steps which are not a flat surface.

It would be easier if you just kept your cats in your apartment.

This safety net your talking about sounds like something my cats would have a good time climbing on so keep that in mind.
