since we don't know your father or the relationship you had with him we can't really tell you what to get...my father is still alive and I got the word "daddy" on my right foot, when he dies i plan on getting a big smiley face on the other foot. Not because i would be happy that he passed, but because my dad has a sort of obsession with smiley faces. not everyone has to knwo why you have the specific tattoo, as you said, it on YOU forever, get something that will remind you of him every day for the rest of your life.

An admirable reason to get a tattoo.
I always suggest something that the person liked or was really passionate about. Then find images that relate to that, to incorporate into whatever else you'd like to include in the tattoo (Dates/Name/Ect.)
For example, my best friend died when I was twelve, and it took me a long time to figure out what I thought would do her justice as my memorial tattoo to her. I finally decided on a swallow, because she loved animals and wanted to become a vetrenarian when she grew up. What made me finalize this decision was when I found out that to a sailor the swallow means a "safe return home" and I felt that the swallow on me, would symbolize her, and her safe return home to heaven to wait for myself, and her other family and friends.
I hope you find what you're looking for, for your father.

You might consider having a portrait done, just be sure the artist has some in his portfolio, so you can see how his portraits come out.

We didn't know your father, you do. What would best represent him, and the life he lead ? It does not have to be masculine. Just meaningful.

When my aunt died my cousin (that was her mom that died) got a tattoo of a ladybug. It's a small tattoo and her foot but her mom loved ladybugs. You should get something that reminds you of him or something that he loved.

Whatever you decide-take your time!
A memorial tattoo is the most personal kind you can get.
