This was not by Gods design at all, God made perfect human being`s and even fore-warned them of the outcome if they disobeyed Him, and as God is the Creator He was entitled to His creatures loyalty.
Adam and Eve in spite of all God had done for them turned away from His love by commiting the sin of pride and so they lost the life of grace God had bestowed upon them.
Evil is not a person but an act of the will so we can say that it is a free will choice and not Gods doing at all, not forgetting of course that once we commit our first sin then it is all too easy to commit another and so on.
Had Adam and Eve rejected the Devil`s temptation and remained loyal to God we would not experience evil as we know it today.

You have to back to Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis. God gave them the choice to obey or disobey him because he wants us to love him sincerely. He does not want "Robots" as followers. Because Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, they became corrupted, and a curse came upon them (sin) because of their disobedience. That same curse(sin) has been brought down to all generations.

It's called free will. If She hadn't given us the option of being bad, there would be no virtue in being good.

he has no choice in the matter, seeing as humans are real and gods are not.

Of course, I could point out that according to the christian mythology god created satan knowing well in advance everything he would do if he made him exactly that way, and still chose to do it.
