The early Christians lived the story of Jesus as eye witnesses.

Mary and Joseph were there from the beginning.

Mary and the Apostles were there at the end.

the stories of Jesus were told in Christian communities for a generation or so before they were written down. I am not sure what you mean by 'before christianity got to it' - christianity in this context simply means 'those people who told the story of Jesus and believed it'
